Complete Placenta Previa at 19 weeks

Hi all - So I went in for my anatomy scan at 19 weeks and I found out that I have complete placenta previa. The doctor explained that it is centered directly on my cervix with equal coverage on both sides of the opening. I was super bummed once I started doing research and learning about the complications I could be facing. I literally feel like a ticking time bomb, ready to hemorrhage at any second. It's very scary!

I don't know what to expect. I am also surprised that my dr didn't give me restrictions for activity besides pelvic rest. I have an almost 2 year old at home, so he keeps me plenty busy. I am also extremely active...I lift heavy usually 5-6 days a week. I have cut that down so that I'm not lifting as heavy and I don't run anymore.

I just wanted to hear any experiences mom's have had with complete placenta previa like I have at around 20 weeks...good, bad, ugly! Thanks!

Re: Complete Placenta Previa at 19 weeks

  • I'm at 32 weeks with complete previa have to say it is scary reading in to it even more so when the Dr's don't tell you much but pelvic rest and it may move but so far I'm the 2% it hasn't moved at all I've been put on full bed rest sine 24 weeks vary hard to do with two boys 4 and 2 years old and no family to help. Dr's told me just pelvic rest until I bled for 3 days and was in the hospital those 3 days then its been "full bed rest" after that its impossible to do with kids I only did full bed rest for about 2 weeks so far I've been fine. Dr's also told me no exercising what so ever after I had the bled. So just watch out and any bleeding you have go to the hospital asap.

  • I was diagnosed at 21 weeks with a complete previa. Same as you mine is completely centered and considered a "textbook" complete previa. I'm now 28 weeks and it has not moved at all! Upon being diagnosed, my OB said pelvic rest and no heavy lifting. 4 days later I had my first bleed which landed me in the hospital for 4 days. It wasn't a bad hemorrhage, but enough to go to L&D. Once home I was on full bed rest and only getting up to go to the bathroom and showering once a day. I went 6 weeks at home and had my second bleed out of no where 3 days along. This one was somewhat similar to the last, but took a little longer to stop bleeding. I see my OB and high risk dr in the morning to see if they feel comfortable enough to send me back home or if I need to stay longer or until I deliver.

I would watch what you do and put your feet up as much as possible. I have a 3 year old and 1 year old at home, so we scheduled family members and friends to care for the girls when my DH isn't at home so I can rest like I need. I'll be saying T&P for you that you don't have any bleeds or bed rest.
  • Thank you so much for sharing and I hope that you have a safe and healthy delivery with this baby as well!
  • Thanks for the positive vibes juleskeim!!
  • I'm in the same situation you are, was diagnosed with complete previa at my anatomy scan. Every time I wipe, I'm afraid there will be blood.  So far so good though! My doc also didn't put me on any restrictions, which I was surprised by.  It's been about a 1.5 months since my diagnosis, and I'll go back in about a week from now for a follow-up ultrasound to see if its moved.

Good luck with yours, fingers crossed for no bleeding!

  • Let me know how your checkup goes!!
  • Similar to the other girls, I was diagnosed with CPP at my anatomy scan. On pelvic rest now but so fearful of bed rest in my future. Just so hard not to constantly be worrying. The positive outcomes really do help though! Julieskeim, thank you for sharing your positive story!!
  • I am also on the same boat. My Dr didn't give me any exact restrictions but said to rest and put my feet up as much as possible and go to the hospital if I have any bleeding. According to my Doula around 95% of the time the placenta will move up by the 36 weeks or so.

  • I was just diagnosed with complete placenta previa at my 20week 2 day appointment this morning as well.  It has taken us 4 years, multiple miscarriages, and a clotting disorder diagnosis (MTHFR, prothrombin genetic mutation, and protein S deficiency) to get this far, so this was discouraging news to say the least. BUT- getting on here and reading success stories makes me feel a bit better.  As for restrictions, my doc said strict pelvic rest, no lifting heavier than 10 lbs, and no straining.  She said I could still do eliptical or swimming, and yoga (assuming the positions aren't straining).  And of course call right away with spotting, or go to ED with serious bleeding. Best of luck to you- looks like we are in this boat together : )
  • I was diagnosed with complete placenta previa at 20 weeks at my anatomy scan.  I went back 3 1/2 weeks later for another check, and fortunately mine had moved all the way out of the way.  I didn't have any further problems and had a vaginal delivery at 38w4d (spontaneous labor).  I wish you all the best!
