Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How soon after D&C were you able to run?

Hi ladies. A brief intro. I was expecting a baby on July 7. I had spotting at 5 weeks so my OB did an ultrasound two weeks ago. The baby had a heart beat but my yolk sac was very large, 8mm (5mm is considered normal). So they had me come back today. A large yolk sac usually has a poor prognosis. Sure enough there was no heart beat today. Based on growth, the doctor believe I lost the fetus a week or so ago. I am going in for a d&c tomorrow afternoon. I am avid runner, but wasn't able to run for the past two weeks because a uterine bleed was also discovered during the first ultrasound. I am anxious to get back out there, running is my therapy. How soon after the d&c were you able to exercise? Just trying to get a sense of how I will feel.

Thanks ladies!

  • I am not a runner, but I did go back to the gym as soon as my bleeding became light (about a week later). I took it really easy and then was cleared to exercise at my 2 week appointment. So sorry for your loss.

  • First of all, I am so sorry for your loss.  I would check with your doctor, but at least give yourself a couple of days. I was so sore the day after my d&c, that I could barely get around.  I was feeling more normal a few days later, and was back to normal activity within a week (gym and walking - I am def not a runner!).

  • I would speak with your doctor for exercise clearance. A D&C isn't major surgery and I actually went bowling the the evening after my D&C (with suction). I had minimal bleeding and just wore a panty liner, and I literally had no cramps. I was told to take the weekend off and my only restrictions were no baths, sex, tampons, douching (which I never have done) or anything else in the vagina (cause, I guess you never know...) for 2 weeks post op. I'm so sorry about you loss!  Is this your first loss? PM if you want the ins and outs. I have had 2 NMC and 1 D&C. Good luck.

I was an amateur boxer before and I ran quite a lot before the pregnancy and during.  After my natural MC, I thought I would go back to running in no time.  It took me about 5 weeks after MC to finally get back to it.  Now I'm 7 week post MC and while I'm nowhere near my old performance, I can start running 5 - 6 miles with moderate pace without feeling like I'm about to faint.

In my case, it took me a while for my body to get back to normal and get the energy it needs.
  • I had my d&c yesterday and asked this question to my dr.  He said whenever you want.  Im going running tomorrow.  I feel like it might make me feel better in a weird way..
  • Thanks for all the replies. I had my D&C last Thursday. I stopped bleeding by Saturday and ran/walked 3 miles on Sunday. I took it really slow and easy. Since then I ran 4 miles on Tuesday and Thursday and it felt pretty good. I am a little out of shape because I was on total pelvic rest for the two weeks in between ultrasounds and was told not to run but running is actually helping. I am taking today as a rest day and I I have to say its hitting me harder than it has all week. Physically I am back to normal but mentally I am definitely not. :( Going to try to do 6 or 7 miles tomorrow morning with my running group. It will be hard seeing them again because they are going to wonder where I have been.
