Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Will baby on sensitive formula have problems with milk?

We have had my 11 month old son on sensitive formula since day one. First Similac, then switched to Parent's Choice around 6 months, which went great. We did attempt to switch him to a regular non sensitive formula, and it did not go well - he reacted terribly and had horrible diarrhea for a week. For those that have switched from sensitive formulas to milk, did you find that there were any issues in how they tolerated the milk?

Re: Will baby on sensitive formula have problems with milk?

  • From what I've seen, they may. It all depends on why they need sensitive formula. Like, in my sons case he needs a gentler protein than whats in regular milk, so we're doing goats milk. Some babies need sensitive formula because they don't tolerate lactose. Then they'll need lactose free milk. I guess I would see how he handled regular milk and if it goes poorly then maybe he needs goats milk or lactose free. Since the thing with sensitive brands like Similac Sensitive or Gentlease is that they have some broken down proteins and low lactose. With brands like Gerber Gentle (like my son is on, he didn't tolerate the other ones) it's all broken down proteins. If he doesn't tolerate those two milks then I'd be looking at coconut milk or almond milk (with the added protein and unsweetened).

  • Above poster sums it up greatly. Mine was on soy, and couldn't handle even lactose free milk when we switched, so we did goats milk. We were told by our pedi to try cow's milk if we wanted every month or so just to see if she would out grow her intolerance. By 18 months, she was able to handle milk.

It's really trial and error, because every child is different.
