Size difference in identical twins?

My mo-di identical girls were born at 32 weeks after one twin's amniotic sac prematurely ruptured. At birth, they were 4 lbs and 3lbs 6oz, so 10oz apart. They were in the NICU for 4 and 5 weeks respectively, and we are just home now. The smaller twin has struggled with breathing a little more (still on oxygen, although very low flow) and isn't as food obsessed as the larger twin. They are 1 lb apart now, which is a pretty big difference when they are 6 and 5 lbs.

For those of you that had identicals that were different sizes when small, did they even out over time? Always maintain a size difference? They are both growing well now, but I'm just curious.

Re: Size difference in identical twins?

  • My mo-dis aren't very old yet (almost 5 months) but they've maintained some of their size difference, though it isn't too big of one. They were 6lbs 1oz and 6lbs 9oz at birth, at their 4 month check up they were 12lbs 12oz and 13lbs 2oz.

  • My boys were 6oz. apart at birth and have always stayed about 1/2lb. to 1lb. apart.  Baby A always being a tiny bit smaller.  But at 41/42 lbs. you barely see the difference.

  • My boys were born at the exact same weight, and they are now 3lbs apart at 13 months.

  • My mo-dis were 1 lb 5 oz different at birth, and have maintained a comparable size difference almost a year later, with L always around the 50th percentile for weight, and N at the 5th. N just isn't as interested in eating, and he never stops moving, so I think that has something to do with it.....the pedi has never been concerned, though, as he is growing consistently and is healthy. Family members do always comment on how he has to "catch up" to his brother, though. :-P

  • My identical boys were 2 lbs and 2 lbs 7 oz at birth (about 20% different). They are 28 mo now and have maintained a significant size difference ever since. Right now it's about 2-3 lbs and about 2 inches but it's been a while since they had an official weigh in. My little guy has forever been less interested in eating than my bigger one. Just in the past few months he started out eating his brother at times so I know he's finally putting on weight. However his body structure is just smaller and shorter in every way still.
