Cloth diapering... Who has and what kind?

Hi everyone, I am planning on cloth diapering at home and using disposable only when out and about.  I will be at SAHM and plan on getting those hose attachment for the commode and spraying off the diapers before washing.  My husband will be having a men's shower cooking out and bringing diapers while I have my shower. My friends do this and it works out great! I've heard great things about cloth diapering and I understand the initial investment is expensive, but I know we will save big time in the long run.  Anyone else plan on going cloth or have experience?  Which do you like?  So far I'm most interested in the grow with me kind with snaps.

  • I use mostly bum genius and love them because you can use them from infant up toddler. I have a variety of other kinds but i like the BGs the best.

You should hang out on the cloth diapering board they are really helpful.

  • I used prefolds and covers for the first few months and switched to Kawaii diapers when he was bigger. Bum genius are my other favorite. There's a lot of good info on the cloth diapering board if you want more extensive info and opinions. I loved cloth and will use them again with this baby. I would only buy a couple of each before you have the baby and once they are here try them all out and buy a larger stash of your favorite brand.
  • I would try a few of different things until you find what you like.  My siggy link has what I have found I like.  Just FYI, there's no need to spray diapers until baby starts solids ;)
  • I currently cloth diaper and love it. I have SEVERAL brands (11). My favorite one size (fits babies 10 pounds and up) Bumgenius, rumparooz and some of my WAHM (etsy diapers made by Dutch Baby Diapers). The sprayer is not necessary until the baby either starts solids or is formula fed (breast milk is water salable). I bought a hand held bidet sprayer from homedepot. It was 30.00 cheaper, better quality and had an adjustable flow :). The ladies on the cloth diaper board can be super helpful too!

  • We use the bum genius 4.0 and I love them. We also use the best bottom hybrids which I like for the day, but wouldn't use them at night. I have a friend who CDs and she just suggested coqui baby-- I ordered some but they haven't come in yet so I can't say yay or nay.
  • I second bum genius. We use the 4.0 all in one organics with snaps. DS is nearly 18months and we have had no issues and only 1 diaper rash (that came from when he was is disposables at daycare).
We are thrilled with both their performance and the cost savings and really don't notice any extra laundry or work.
In the summer months we sun bleach outside which keeps them looking great as well.
I would really recommend looking into detergents as well - the wrong detergent can adversely affect both absorption and wear&tear. It is good to know before getting into cloth what detergents are available in your area and their cost.
  • Thanks ladies! I had no idea there was a cloth diapering board! Where are these boards?? I've been on this site for a few months now and I still feel like I have no idea how to use it!

  • I plan on doing this as well, I hate how when I tell people this they think I'm crazy. But it will save a lot of money in the long run and it's better for the environment. I plan on staying at home too so the laundry part doesn't bother me. I know it's going to be tough but so what? So is laundry any day! I've read a couple of blogs about it and one lady had a great idea for dirty diapers while they are waiting to be washed. She said get a pail and buy a laundry liner for it, take a wet wash cloth and sprinkle some tea tree oil I the cloth and leave it in the pail with the dirty diapers and it really helps with the smell!
  • We use AMP OS Duos and a couple of WAHM covers here and there. As mentioned, I love that these will last us from nearly newborn (we waited until her umbilical stump fell off) to potty training. And they are so darn cute. It is a bit of an investment initially ($300-500 for a whole stash), but we broke even within the first few months, and are about to use the same diapers on #2, saving us even more.

We don't find the laundry to be a big deal at all.

  • I use a variety, but of the big brands, I like Bumgenius 4.0 pockets and Blueberry pockets - great for day care, all people, etc. I also have a few favorite WAHMs who make diapers by hand. Love those.

  • Oh, and for the record, I've never really done anything special to my diapers, and they never smell. Not even in the pail. I think disposables smell WAY worse. They suck. Hate them. :)

  • Love cloth diapering. Well, as much as one can love diapering. GroVias were our favorites with BumGenius a second. I bought a sprayer but never ended up using it as I used flushable liners. They are a thin liner you put in the diaper and you can plop it out of the diaper and straight into the toilet. It lifts the poo out.

  • I use a combo of fitteds and bum genius. I like them both for different reasons. It took me a few months though to see what really worked for me. There can be a bit of trial and error.

Also, you may find you don't even need disposables when out of the house. I just carry a wet bag in my diaper bag and a few spare diapers in there too as well as in my car and it has worked out fine. CDing while out of the house is a lot easier than it sounds.
