Success after IF

AMH level is now .19! Panic at the disco :(

So without really thinking this through (i have a 7 month old), i went to check in with my RE (the hot one)...I guess i went in on the right day of my cycle because i somehow got swept into the next round of cyclers. My new amh level is only .19 but i think i have 8-10 follicles going which is like a miracle. So cocky me, i'm like - well, IVF #2 worked so i got this... then i started googling and saw that its possible that none of these will take and now i'm eating humble pie, with a very full uterus (retrieval is soon hopefully) and i can't breathe. What if this doesn't work???? omg! i am remembering again how shitty this was. please let this work.
Me: 34 - low ovarian reserve
DH: 40 - no issues

3 failed IUI's

IVF #1 3/12 - 13 eggs, 9 fertilized,  2 transferred (1 grade 2 blast, 1 early blast), no frosties, 3/30/12 - 9dp5dt spotting, BFNs

IVF #2. 7/12 - 18 days of stims, 3 mature eggs, 3 fertilized (ICSI), 3 transferred (9, 8, 7 cell) on day 3.  First beta - 8/21/12 = 105, beta #2 - 8/23/12 = 268, beta #3 - 8/30/12 = 2,352. 2nd u/s - 9/4/12. Baby Boy born 5/1/2013.

IVF #3 Now (12/13). AMH is very low - 0.19. ER (12/5) 12 eggs, 10 mature, 7 fertilized using ICSI. 3 transferred (8,8,8 cell - all grade 2) on day 3. First beta - 12/21/13 = 126, beta #2 - 12/23/13 = 400, beta #3 - na (office was closed for new year's). First sonogram - TWINS aka OMG! -

  • I know it's totally a cliche, but you only need one.  Don't panic just yet.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

Yeah, my AMH was undetectable and we got KU waiting to do an IVF freeze all cycle to save some for in a few years. I am of the general opinion that AMH is b.s.

Oh, and my AFC was like 4 at the time.

A follicle count of 8-10 is really good in the DOR world!

Also, you are young in the IF world and have proven fertility which means a lot.  My most recent RE (I think he is #6) told me that he would take me with my stats (undetectable AMH, high fsh and very low AFC) and proven fertility at my age (33) over a 38 year old with excellent AMH and no proven fertility.

Edit: I'm not saying that AMH does not necessarily indicate that there is a reserve issue (or a diminishing reserve issue), but I don't think it really means a whole with respect to current fertility.  I have seen soooo many women with really low AMH levels get bfp's.  The research I've read seems to back up my thoughts.  IMO, I think the most reliable indicator of success is probably age (assuming no reason for quality concerns like prior chemo) followed by AFC and with fsh and amh coming in a very distant 3rd and 4th.

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier
    2011: FSH 13.3 & E 99; AMH 0.54 2nd FSH 6.2 E 40's AFC: 8
BFP from Clomid/IUI ~ Pre-e and IUGR during pregnancy ~ DS born 9/4/12
    Feb./March 2013: AMH less than 0.16 (undectable) and AFC = 4;
BFP from supps ~ DS#2 due May 2014

I wonder if I'll feel cocky too when I go back. Not on purpose but it's crossed my mind. It'll work. Think positive!!

I don't know if cocky is the correct word, but after this pregnancy, I now feel like I need to start using some form of birth control whereas previously I did not feel that there was any reason to...

Ha! knowing what i know now - i want to kick the 16 year old me for going on BCPs and wasting all that money!  Anyway this cycle is totally different... last time i was so so strung out and sad... i got 3 eggs...i was crying on the gurney at retrieval, i was crying during the implantation. When i was taking home preg tests my husband was yelling at me bc he didn't want me to get our hopes up. Now that DS is here - our lives are filled with so much joy that whatever baby joins us is icing on the cake...  but still with the cost of IVF, and just emotionally, the stakes are so high. I got alot of eggs the first go around and got zero. I'm at a better RE now but still... very panicky. then i start panicking that what if this works and we get twins - 3 under 3! omg. i gotta get a xanax.

Glad that I could make you feel better!

I think proven fertility/prior, recent birth means a lot because it is proof there are probably not quality/chromosomal issues with your egg or DH's sperm.  Plus, it means that you can get pregnant (i.e. have successful implantation) and carry a child.

I mean, it probably does not mean as much if your prior pregnancy was 10 years ago, but in our cases we both have recent pregnancies.

  • I'm sorry. FWIW, my RE wouldn't even test my AMH. When I asked after my AFC going into my successful cycle was 6, he said he didn't need that test to tell me I need a lot of meds to respond. He already knew that, so why cause all the stress!

    Best of luck to you!
