Homeschooling

helloooooo

Let's do a check in.
How is everyone doing? How was your thanksgiving?- We're doing really well! We had a low key weekend, lots of family time. Which was really amazing.

Did you study anything special?- We did a pilgrim unit. The girls really enjoyed reading books on them. I also ordered sticker books that they loved.

Are you doing anything for advent/holiday study?- we're doing an advent family devotional. We do it before the kids go to bed.

Any new resources?- I found this on etsy. I can't wait to order them! https://www.etsy.com/listing/79560624/home-school-material-chalkboard-mat?ref=af_you_favitem

Re: helloooooo

  • Hey!

We're doing well - survived the holidays, although I'm feeling like I need another holiday just to recover from the busyness of the last one!

School is going well.  We took a break from our normal curriculum about two weeks prior to Thanksgiving.  We kept up with math and phonics, but focused the rest of our time on learning about Thanksgiving - a day spent studying the pilgrims, one on the Mayflower, the Native Americans, the First Thanksgiving, and one on turkeys/other common foods.  The kids had a blast and put together lap books to share with family at our Thanksgiving get-together.

Today was day 2 of our Advent adventure.  I wrote about what we're doing in my blog if anyone's interested.  Basically each day we focus on a Bible verse about the Nativity story, a letter of the day taken from the verse, Christmas carol relating to the verse/letter, a theme for the day, craft relating to the theme, and the kids unwrap a book to read about the theme/verse for the day.  We also hang an ornament on our tree that contains a name for Jesus that either starts with the letter of the day or is found in the Christmas carol we're singing or verse for the day.  It's busy, but so much fun!  It sounds like a ton of stuff, but really it's just fun stuff that we fly through and the kids love.  It's already creating a lot of anticipation for Christmas in the kids AND me!

As far as resources go, I haven't really found any new stuff recently.  My goal is to start thinking about stocking stuffers for the kids that will be useful for school, so maybe I'll start a thread where we can all share ideas.

Hi! I'm not a homeschool parent (yet), but I was homeschooled 1st-10th grade and will be homeschooling my own children when I have them. Im 22 and me and DH are ready to start a family. My 6 year old stepson will be starting homeschool next year with his mom, but DH and I are hoping to be involved since we were both homeschooled and are passionate about it. Want to get a little practice in before I have my own children ;) I read Bible stories to him before bed and take him to Sunday school since he doesn't get that at his mom's. This Christmas I plan to read him the Christmas story and buy a nativity scene to remind him of what Christmas is about. We will not be doing Santa at our house and keeping gifts at a minimum. Im taking him shopping to pick out something special for his dad and my youngest brother who is his closest friend so he can get into more of a giving spirit.
