2 1/2 year old hitting

Any advice on how to deal with hitting?  My 2 1/2 year old hits his sister and we've tried time out but it doesn't seem to help.  He doesn't do it at day care just at home.  Any other ways of disciplining this behavior?

Just be consistent. We've been struggling with hitting since my kid was about 22 months. He still hits now at 34 months, but not as often as he used to and he usually immediately apologizes because he knows he's done something wrong. He continues to get time out when he hits and we praise him enthusiastically when he stops himself from hitting or displays gentle behavior.

Thank you!  With no responses I was beginning to think my DS was the only hitter out there, haha!
