Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Naps for 7+ month olds

I think DS is at the transition to going down from 3 to 2 naps a day. I was putting him down automatically every 2 hrs, however these days he's stretching it to 3 hrs (slowly). What's the general nap times for this age? How many hrs after morning wake up & the afternoon nap?

Do bedtimes start to change too? Anything else you've experienced I'm open to hearing!

Re: Naps for 7+ month olds

  • My 8.5month old does two long naps (1.5-2+hrs) and a short 45min nap.  It will vary greatly on the day if her nap is cut short because we are out and about she has extra naps.

Generally daddy wakes her at 6:45 to see her before work.  She'll sleep 8:30-10:30, then she'll sleep 12:30-2:30 with a short nap from about 4:30-5:15 to hold her over until bedtime around 7:30.  Basically she is not awake more than 2hrs.

Her bedtime was messed up for a while (she popped 2 teeth, started standing, started saying "mum" and "dada") so she would go down, think it was a nap and then be up to play in the evening.  We just went with it, she was clearly in pain from the teeth and a lot was going on with her developmentally.  She was in a good mood so we played with her and put her back down later in the evening.  Her teeth are through and she's settled back into her 7:30 bedtime routine.

  • Our guy is 7.5 months old and on 2-3 naps a day. He usually wakes up around 7 am. He naps around 9:30 and 1:30 or 2. If the naps are shorter, he will take a third nap around 4 pm. We start nursing around 7 and he is in the crib by 7:30.

Lol, that was my thought!  My almost 9month old could not do that no matter what we tried.  we can occasionally get 3hrs out of her if we are out and about and she is busy watching stuff...but at home 2hrs is still her max.

That was my impression too. My DD will be 9 months in 2 days and she lasts 2 hours from the time she wakes up (even if it's a good 12 hour night sleep) and then 2.5 hours from nap 1 to nap 2. 3 to 3.5 hours from nap 2 to bedtime.
  • We're at this kind of schedule
    630-7: wake up
    9:00-9:30-nap 1
    1:30-2:00-nap 2
    700-7:30-bed time

naps are 1-2 hours a piece.  This weekend she only took 1 nap (she woke up at 7:30, napped from 10:00-12:30 and never fell asleep again) and she was exhausted, but survived.  we've  been on the schedule above since about...5 months? The most awake time she usually has is 4 hours, maybe 4.5.   Bed time as been the same since 2 months, so that didn't change. I guess I try and do 2-3 hours for the first "awake" time, 3-4 for the second, and then whatever is left over for the last. She doesn't really got over tired anymore though, she naps better if she's up longer then if i put her down too early.

  • Our schedule is messed up nowadays since he's been teething extra-hard lately, but this is what we were doing and want to go back to.

    6:30 wake up
    7:30-9:30 nap
    1:30-3:30 nap
4-5 "optional" nap - He doesn't always need it, but we allow time for him to mellow down even if he doesn't sleep.
    9:30 bedtime

He seems to stay up long, but really still sleeps 12-15 hours a day. Works for him, works for us.

  • Since DS was 3 months old, we've had the same bedtime and wake up times, it's just the naps that we've adjusted. DS was 10 1/2 months before he dropped his 3rd nap. My suggestion is to not take away completely the 3rd nap until you can see for a week or two that he doesn't need it anymore. DS has had times when he refuses a nap for a few days and then he resumes them. Sometimes the reason becomes apparent but other times it's just been random.

  • My daughter is 9 months. During the week we dropped the 3rd nap around 7 months. During the week she wakes around 6:45 am. She takes a morning nap around 10 am (1hr) and an afternoon nap from 1-3. She usually goes to bed around 7-7:30 pm. On the weekends we don't have a schedule. We tend to sleep in until 8-9 am. Sometimes depending on what's going on she will take a 3rd nap but we're usually off our week schedule by 2-3 hrs.

She sleeps 12 hours, sometimes more at night, so she isn't that tired! Lol

I know! Sounds crazy, but she would scream if I tried putting her down before that. Some days she barely naps an hour. She just isn't a napper.

When I was 1 my mom said I was done with naps. Wouldn't take them.

    Maybe she is like me?

  • Our night sleep doesn't seem to be changing even though we're going from 3 to 2 naps now also, she still sleep 7:30-7:30 as she has been. I've noticed that the afternoon nap is maybe shifting a bit later and maybe lasting a little longer, but the morning nap has stayed the same for us. Our schedule is:
    Wake-up 7:30
    Morning Nap 9:30-10:30
    Afternoon Nap 1:00-3:00
    (Disappearing nap 4:45-5:30)
    In bed by 7:30
