More Dr. Who (No Spoilers)

Can a relative Dr. Who newbie start watching this new series from scratch? I wanna be part of the fun, but I don't wanna be lost.

  • Yes. I've never seen the old series and I started with Christopher Eccelston.

But I thought that was sort of a "reboot". There had been a big gap between that and the previous series and they wanted it to feel a bit fresh, right? I've seen a couple episodes with him.

Eccelston is the ninth doctor. He is the regeneration following the Time War, which is kind of where the reboot starts with him. But you don't need to see the old series to understand that. It's explained. The reboot started about a decade after DW was off the air.

Right. I mean, can I start with this current doctor to be "current" and then catch up with the Eccelston and others later?

Eh, I would go back and start with Eccelston. Matt Smith's run ends with this year's Christmas special and they are bringing on a new doctor. So I wouldn't jump in with Smith at this point. The new guy probably won't start until later next year, so you'd have time to catch up.

No, start with the 9th Doctor. You will be lost if you don't.

*sigh* Ok. This was not the answer I hoped for.

Sorry, LD. She's right though. The Eccelston and Tennant stuff is really good though.

  • There are just so many little details strewn about the series that you need to know for the show to make sense. Cheater.

  • You really do need to start with Eccelston.  Even if you didn't it's so good that it would be a shame not to watch those seasons.

Netflix has all the seasons on streaming Except for the Clara eps.  They don't have the rights to those yet.
  • I think Clara eps are available through Amazon. Not sure though.

OMG I HOPE SO. My dvr erased ALL my episodes so I haven't seen the last season.

I'm not sure, but I thought they were on prime. I could be wrong though.

  • I don't know how Amazon's streaming works. I have prime, but I guess I still have to pay for some stuff? Bummer.

If it's not in the prime library, it may be soon. The other seasons are now free on prime, so this one should probably go up eventually :)
