You can, and use the pocket shell like a cover, but you wouldn't be able to reuse it like a cover since the fabric inside can't be wiped clean. I'm not sure why you "obviously" wouldn't stuff it, a lot of people stuff their pockets with prefolds or flats as opposed to inserts and find it often absorbs better.
i'm pretty sure you could, but you'd still have to change the whole diaper at every change since the top layer of the pocket would still get gross. You couldn't reuse the pocket like a cover
I still don't get this. Why not? Applecheeks and softbums are marketed that way.
If your insert/snap in/flat or prefold is absorbant enough you can reuse it a couple times. I think the thing is you can't wipe it clean in between. However, if a cover gets poop on it I always considered that dirty. I didn't wipe clean and re-use.
How is it different than using Softbums (IDK about Applecheeks) since they have the same fleecy type inside layer and since with the absorbent material on top of the liner the liner does not get as wet as it does when used as a pocket, at most it gets slightly damp if the insert is soaked. When it gets slightly damp, I just let it air dry before using again since the clean insert is what is against LO's skin - not much different than using wool covers except the pocket diapers would need washing more frequently than a wool cover.
With that in mind, I have used my Kawaii pocket diapers with my BB inserts and used them the same way as my BB shells. I just washed them twice for every wash of the BB shells - not counting poopy cover washings.

Eh, I bet it's more of a marketing thing honestly. One company makes you buy more bc you can't reuse. The other has a "new invention" that allows you to use a pocket as a cover!!
Maybe it's also the insert type?? Obviously BG can't market the microfiber to be used outside the pocket. And the had flips. So they wouldn't want to take people away from buying those either.
