Cloth Diapering

Rumparoos / diaper service

I have 2 questions. I posted a few days ago for some suggestions to get my husband on board with CD. I used all of your suggestions and crashed and burned. We had a big argument and we never argue. His argument was that we have a HE washer and stuff gets stuck in the drainage system causing it to smell. he said diapers will make it smell worse and he is not washing his dress clothes with poop. he claims that he could smell when I washed the small set of Rumparoos that I have. I think he is ridiculous and I do NOT want to continue to use disposables. It sickens me to think of how many we go through and that they all end up in a landfill.

Im thinking of offering 2 compromises and was wondering if anyone had any experience with either of these. ONe is to go to a laudromat. wash them before work, go and switch at lunch and pick them up after work. The other is using a diaper service. I really wanted to buy my diapers, but this seems like a good compromise.

My final question is regarding Rumparoos. I have a small stash of these. LO is almost 6 weeks old and weighs about 10lbs. He is skinny. They still don't fit him and gap at the front. Any suggestions of a different brand that may do better for him? Thanks!

Re: Rumparoos / diaper service

  • PPs gave you good advice. I also wouldn't leave my diapers at a laundromat unattended. As for smaller diapers, if you're looking for smaller pockets, you could go to a smaller size like Kawaii Pure and Naturals or a 2-sized diaper like Thirsties. These will last til about 20 lbs, not all the way to potty training though. Or just wait 2 weeks and the rumparooz may well fit. A six week old is growing pretty quickly. My 7 week old is just starting to fit into her one sized diapers at 11 lbs.

  • Rumparooz are among the smallest OS diapers out  there. You may want to try Kawaii P&N pockets as PP suggested. They aren't OS, but they aren't strictly a newborn diaper either. They were a favorite when DD was smaller and if I was having another LO they would make up at least half of my stash.

As far as your compromises...I'm not sure either would work well for you. I wouldn't leave my diapers unattended at a laundromat. And you may have difficulty finding a DCP that will do prefolds & covers if you go the service route (they may require a fresh cover for every change if they'll do it at all). And you'll still have to wash your covers yourself.

Good luck. FWIW YH is not making any sense. HE machines drain just the same as non-HE machines. And newborn poo (either BF or FF) is water soluble, so there's nothing to clog anyway.

(The only other thing I can think of is that you have the same 3-ish year old basic Kenmore TL HE machine that my mom has. There are no drainage issues with it, but it doesn't use enough water to get *anything* clean, much less diapers. It was glaringly apparent when I washed diapers and it smelled awful as soon as I opened the lid.)

  • If he's noticing a "smell" then I agree with cleaning your filter or getting the machine serviced if things are getting stuck. There are a bunch of DIY cleaning your HE machine you can do as regular maintenance. You could spray diapers now to help appease him about poop in the washer too. As for pocket fits I hear the kawaii p&n are good for smaller babies but LO just needs some time to chunk up a bit. When my guys were tiny we used mostly prefolds and thirsties covers and thirsties duo 1 pockets.

  • What about getting a separate washer for the diapers?  Would that be an option for you?  Maybe you could get a cheap top loader to use for diapers only?  In the long run, I don't think that would cost any more than using a laundromat and it would be much more convenient.
