Babies: 6 - 9 Months

For those w/ 2 or more

DH and I are contemplating putting a guest bed in the office.  We'd only put a twin since a full would take up too much room.  However, the office will eventually be DDs "big girl" room when we have our next LO - say in about 2 years.  Will DD need a toddler bed at 2-3 years old and how long would she be in it?  If I can get away with just a twin bed I will but I have no idea (FTM) when kids typically move from crib to toddler bed to twin or if they can skip toddler bed.

Thanks for the help!

  • We put DS1 in a toddler bed a few months shy of age 3. The only reason we did a toddler bed vs. a regular bed is because I was pregnant and we were going to put our place on the market soon - I had nowhere to store a crib (our crib is convertible, so it was easier to store 1 rail and convert it). You don't really need a toddler bed and can go straight to a twin with guard rails.

  • Lurking, but we went right from crib to full bed at 2 years. You are fine having a twin be her next bed.

  • We were given a toddler bed.  If we hadn't been given one, we would have gone directly from crib to single bed.  I don't think a toddler bed is necessary.  DS has slept just fine in a twin bed on vacation.

  • We moved at 2.5 which appears to be about the norm.
  • We moved to a twin bed with toddler rail when was son was just over a year and he did great. He probably would have fallen out without the rail, though, because he moves around a lot in his sleep.
  • Both my girls moved from the crib to a twin bed. DD1 moved at 22 months when she started climbing out. DD2 moved at 2.5 years in prep for her sister needing the crib.

  • DD1 went from the crib to a twin bed w/rails at 2yrs 3 months which gave her a couple of months to get used to it before DD2 came along and needed the crib.

  • Thanks everyone!!  I'm glad I won't have to get a toddler bed so we can just invest in the twin bed we want now and use it for DD when she's ready to move out of her crib!
  • We changed DS's crib to a toddler bed around 2. Then we finally got him a twin size bed around 2 1/2. About a month before DD was born. We would have done a full but his room wouldn't have been big enough with his toys & stuff. DD will use the crib until she crawling out then ill probably just make it into a toddler bed for a little while.

  • We went from crib to queen bed at 20 months to give some time for ds1 to get used to the bed before ds2 came along.
  • The only reason I put my son in a toddler bed at 23 months is because he was getting kicked out of his room to make room for the girls and I wanted him to keep the same mattress for comfort sake.  He already had the crib converted at 21 months because I was no longer allowed to pick him up due to complications with my pregnancy, so he needed to be able to get in/out of bed by himself.  He couldn't keep the crib, since I needed it for the babies, so we just got him the toddler bed so he would have something familiar.  It was a good transistion.  I'll probably keep him in the toddler bed until the girls are ready to leave the cribs (2ish for them, 4ish for him), then pass down his bed and buy one new one for the girls.  That way I get at least 4 years out of each crib mattress too.  I figure everyone will be in a regular bed by 4ish, or as long as they fit in the toddler bed.

  • My daughter climbed out of her crib at 18 months- we tried the toddler bed but she hated it so we went straight to twin.

  • Twin beds are just way more convenient.  If  your toddler gets sick or scared, you can cuddle in his/her twin bed then quietly slip out without waking the child.  You can't do that with a toddler bed.  If you have a tall child (mine are giants in the making), they will out grow the toddler bed in no time, while the twin will last them quite a while.  There is more room to roll around without falling out in a twin bed too.  I personally don't think toddler beds are worth it.
