This is just a WDYT sort of a post.
According to BTN-- Polly is a variant of Molly. Molly is a diminutive of Mary.
Do we think Polly could be a viable NN for a Mary? How do you feel about Polly in general?
Yes, I have thought of the "Polly-wanna-cracker" reference. It doesn't bother me.

Re: Polly
Hmm...Getting Polly from Mary seems a little far-fetched to me. But I've heard other NNs that seemingly have nothing to do with the formal FN.
FWIW: My name is Paula, and I remember in school some kids would say "Polly wanna cracker?" to me, and I really wanted to punch them in the face. Just not a big fan of Polly.

Well yes-- many NN's are not really shortened forms of the actual name-- but are derived either from similar etmological roots-- like how Daisy is a NN for Margaret (Marguerite means "daisy" in French) or they are diminutives.

And I understand how one gets Polly from Mary, but I think that would be a helluvah explanation to have to say every time someone asked if Polly was a nickname or a full name.
LOL-- If we ever did use this name, we'd probably introduce her as Polly. I would not go into my sphiel if we just casually met someone.
Way to be weird, right?

Mary is so seldom used nowadays it doesn't seem necessary to have such oddly derived NNs to distinguish among the Marys anymore. I don't think there is 1 Mary in my son's whole Catholic school, so if it isn't being used heavily in that community, I don't think the general public has to worry about multiple Marys in a class.
