Babies: 6 - 9 Months

nightmare?

MY LO usually STTN starting about 9pm, until 6:00am or later.  He also hasn't had a nighttime feeding routine since he was about 2.5 months old.

Friday night at about 1:45am, he woke up screaming bloody murder.  I went to him, and tried rubbing his back to soothe him, and he cried even harder.  I finally picked him up, and he got even more frantic, but was wide awake at this point.  I was afraid there was something physically wrong with him because he's never seemed that distressed except when he had gastro issues from milk protein intolerance and was bleeding internally, and I was debating taking him to the ER.  But I started walking around with him, and figured I'd try a bottle just in case, and he finally calmed down, finished about 3/4 of it, and I took him to bed with me to monitor him for the rest of the night, but he seemed totally fine after that.

This sound familiar to anyone?  Think this was just a random nightmare?

Re: nightmare?

  • Could have been - I was reading the Wonder Weeks because DD is having some serious sleep issues since last weekend and it turns out we're in a stormy period and apparently around this time they do start to have nightmares.  Awful since I can't tell her some weird trick to get out of them (my parents told me to start laughing in the dream or to find a hole to crawl down into and I would wake myself up).  She was STTN 7pm-6am and now she's up around 2:30 for an hour or more.  It totally sucks but I know she'll get through it eventually.

  • It could be a lot of things. DS2 slept wonderfully at night until he hit about 6 months and then it was pure crap for like 6 weeks. It is/was a mix of things - teething, developmental (learning how to crawl/sit/pull up, solids, etc.
  • We've had two episodes that were exactly what you described. One was around 6 months and another around 7.5 months. I did some reading on night terrors and I'm pretty sure that's what it was. One of the hallmarks is that even though you may pick them up and they appear to be totally awake, they're actually not and you can't soothe them. You just have to wait for it to pass. Both times for us it was about 15 min of hysterical, panicked screaming. Totally heartbreaking but once it was over she went back to sleep just fine and was completely normal in the morning.
  • Oh, and the first time it happened DH was convinced she had been bitten by a spider or something. That's how sudden and hysterical it was, and she was utterly inconsolable. He wanted to strip her down and look for bites.

DH and I did strip DD down one of the first times she had a night terror - it was the worst screaming ever but I didn't find anything and her diaper wasn't messy, just wet.  She was screaming/crying so bad I was in tears not knowing what to do.
  • That's exactly how I felt!  I took his pants off and massaged his tummy looking for knots or something.  I had no idea what was wrong, but since he's had gastro issues in the past, I guess my panicked mind just assumed that would be the source of his pain.  And yes, exactly the same in that he seemed to be awake, but I couldn't soothe him, and then it stopped suddenly and he was fine.
