March 2014 Moms

Will you stay where you're working?

Once this LO comes, do you plan on staying where you're working now or thinking of changing jobs, or maybe staying home?

I don't dislike my job too terribly, but don't see myself staying there forever. So, I'm thinking that once LO is here I might look into something closer to home (I currently commute about an hour)....and possibly somewhere I can do part time to have more time for building my photography business.

So what about you?...staying put, or thinking of a change?

  • Staying where I am. I'll be done with nursing school and I was already offered a position. Yup, very exciting! Unless something opens up in an L&D or the school I used to work at hires me as a nurse. But I don't see that happening.

  • I'm staying where I am, but going to part time. I'll have 12 weeks off with partial pay, then go back to work about 20-25 hours a week. The plan is to work two full days or three half days in the office and the rest of my hours at home.

I really love my job, but I want to be with my baby a significant amount of time. I used to want to be a SAHM, but i just really enjoy working. For me, this is the best of both worlds!

  • I work for my H so staying where I am. Though I'm cutting way down and working from home very part time. If it wasn't for medical needs I would be staying full time after this baby is born, but I can't put him in care for the first 6 months so it's my only choice.
  • I'm actually quitting my job at the end if December because we are moving for my H's job. I'll get to stay home with our daughter and this new baby for a bit, yay!

I will eventually go back to work (maybe a year?), however , I am pretty sure I want to change fields. I teach right now and I'm just so stressed out and overworked all the time. I don't want to go back to that, I'm hoping I can find an administrative job or something similar, but we will see , I get to enjoy my babies for a bit first :)

@Nickiechan - that is one of my fears is that I won't be teaching her enough as daycare is! I mean, we do a lot at home, but she enjoys daycare and does better with routines there (umm , she cleans up after herself there, at home she's like "screw that!!" (Not really her words)). I just hope I can keep things fun and entertaining for her until she goes back, which will be a while.

  • I will be staying where I am. I'm a child and adolescent psychotherapist but I have also worked my way up to being a director in the hospital that I work at. I have the luxury right now of being able to still use my license to do therapy some of the time but also being able to do a lot of teaching and being able to enact positive changes, & I really enjoy that part of my job is well. The other benefit of being in management is that it comes with more flexibility. I'm hoping after my 12 weeks is up to ease back into work slowly rather than straight back to 60 plus hour weeks

  • Ugh I wish I knew. I'm planning on talking with the daycare director today to get pricing info on having a newborn and a 3 yr old there... That's kind of the determining factor. I'm not 100% happy with my job. But I also don't want to stop working. I'm very torn.

  • Ill be going back as well. My boss is great and I do love my current role. Unless we win some big money, ill have no choice but to go back.
  • I am staying where I am but hoping to cut down a day. I'd rather find something else, especially closer to my home, and as there is a lot about my job I don't like, but my friends who offered childcare live near my far away job so I would lose that. It's been stressful thinking about and trying to decide!

  • My mat leave with DD ended last January. I went back full time until May and was able to switch to part time. I'm not crazy about my job, but they've been great with the flexibility (I also WFH because my commute is an hour), so I plan on staying and working part time as long as they'll let me (unless DH gets some killer new job or something). I only work 20-ish hours so it's kind of nice to have a little bit of time to myself while the nanny has DD but still have lots of time with her during the week. And with 2u2, I think I'll value that time even more!

  • I'll be staying where I'm at. We have a family business in adult family care homes and I've been the human resource generalist for almost a year. I'll be able to bring baby to work with me every once in awhile to visit with some of our lower functioning residents. I'm a supporter of daycares as well. I think socializing is very important at young ages and the one we chose teaches some sign language and they're willing to work with me on our cloth diapers! Jackpot lol ;)

  • I'm going to start looking when on ML. I love my office and the guys I work with, but I haven't had a raise in over 5 years. I work for the govt and my pay is based on the economy and so while everything is going up, my wage isn't and it's killing me. I'm going to see what's out there and really look come March/April.

  • I'll graduate in may so I'm hoping to find a job for the fall (preschool or daycare and I've kind of been offered one already!) but I'm not sure if I want to work full time bc I also teach dance, yoga, and Pilates and help out with the marching band, so I feel like that would be way too much while working with a baby. So honestly, I'm not sure.

But until the fall, I'll start working at my current job (waitressing) after graduation, but probably only a couple shifts a week.

  • I love being a 4k teacher and it's my passion! But since 4k isn't mandatory, it gets shoved aside a lot. I'm also one of the only 4k teachers I know with a larger class and no full time aide. I drive 65 minutes one way and would be paying for daycare for two infants. In my eyes, I will never get that time back with my own two children. We were told we may never have children so with two on the way we feel very blessed! I find it hard to leave my own children to go teach and take care of others children. Therefore, I will be a SAHM mom but will probably sub closer to home here and there when my husband is off.

  • I will be going back to work after 4 month ml. I am trying to make partner in the foreseeable future so I have to work the hours. My husband will be a stay at home dad to our two new boys!

  • I've been at my job for 6 years but have a different job lined up for after I have the baby and take some time off. I recently finished my massage therapy program (go me!!) and am excited to start a new career post-partum.
I plan on working part time doing massage, but so plan to keep myself available to my current job to pick up any shifts... It's a good place where all my friends work, own and manage so its flexible.
On the other side... DH wants to go back to school for engineering... Maybe one day my dreams will come true and I can be a SAHM or work 1 long day a week.
  • I'm planning to go back to work after my mat leave, but I need to look into how much it's going to cost to put 2 one years olds and a four year old into care (or hire a nanny…). I have some time to figure it out though. In Canada we have 1 year mat leave with pay from the gov't.

  • I have two jobs one part time one full time. My husband owns his own business so I'm the one who provides the health insurance. I also do a lot for my job working in a group home for the mentally disabled. Hours suck as well. So while I'm on maternity leave I plan on trying to find a new job that is better pay better hours I'm well over qualified for what I do anyways an believe I deserve better to provide for me an my family
  • I will have a 12 wk ML and really don't want to come back and work for the crazy lady that I do now.  Hopefully I can find something with "mother's hours" while on ML.

  • I'm staying at my job. I wish it was closer 1 hour each way commute. However after DS was born I went to 4 10 hour days. Although I work through lunch so it's only 9 hours a day. My boss is great and it is super flexible which is why I stay.

Going back to my current job full time. I love what I do and my boss is awesome. I also know myself well enough to know I would not be happy as a SAHM.

Exactly this. Now, a promotion or two down the road for me means that H would likely stay home.

  • I plan to stay at my job for a while. It is very flexible which I like. BUT...the pay isn't the greatest and we are getting a new CEO...so that might change things a bit. DH also might have a new job venture, and if he does he already said he wants me to stay home (which I would love). So if DH gets the new job (taking over the family farm), I will stay home, if the new CEO comes in and it's not the best situation, I'll start looking around for a new job.
  • I will go back to working where I currently am after my 12 weeks of leave, but would like to find something closer to home after a while. I just can't quit because my benefits are amazing there and DH doesn't get everything offered to him that I do.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • I'll be going back... but hoping to find something new after MatLeave.  I currently commute 1 - 1.5 hours each way and I just can't imagine doing that with a LO.  Plus, with the cost of childcare + the time/gas expense of commuting, I think I'll pretty much be paying to work.  So I need something closer and to make more money - a girl can dream, right?
  • I tried to convince DH I need to stay home for a couple years, but he said "hell no!"...thanks. Current plan is I have to come back to my job, possibly only part time, but I'm not going to stay. I work full time, 45 min from home, and with DH's hours I have to be the primary parent, so I need to find a job in town. I'm only planning on working part time or on-call. I've even considered going back to contract work, which DH is ok with even though I was making pennies, until I find something that will work for us.

  • My ideal (dream) situation would be that once ML is over, I can find something closer to home that is also part time, that also pays decent. Lol. I'm an RN...but hated the hospital near my house, so I doubt ill go back there. I'm hoping to find a doctors office near home that I can be part time at while also building my photography business so that I can eventually do that full time.

In the real world, I have to stay where I'm at til we buy a house since it looks better for consistency, and even when I do switch jobs, might not get to be as part time as I'd like to be.

We'll see how life unfolds, though.

  • I'm a teacher, and have been teaching for 6 years. This is our first, and DH and I have decided I will be staying home!! I haven't told my admins. yet, but I"m sure they have a pretty good idea. It will be hard, but we feel this is the best decision for our family! I can't wait to snuggle with DS everyday!!

  • I'm in a similar boat as many of you.  I have to work as I bring in a bit more $$ than my DH and I carry all of the benefits.  I'll be job searching during my 12 weeks maternity leave as I'm kind of over my job.  The pay is okay and the corporate culture is okay, but if I have to work and be away from my baby all day, I'd rather do something I find a bit more stimulating and that pays better.
  • After DS, I switched to part-time, mostly from home at my same job at a very small company that I'd been with since graduating from college. Now, I'm planning on only doing a couple days a month after LO2 is born. (My boss has indicated she'd like me to continue writing the monthly newsletters, which I think will be good for me. Other than that, I'll be a SAHM though!

  • I enjoy my job and they are very flexible with me so I'll be staying where I am. I do hope to reduce my hours once baby is here. Also, I am building a home based business so that I can leave my job and work from home full time within 3-5 years.

I have a love/hate relationship with my job and ill be returning back FT after 12 weeks maternity leave. I don't think I have it in me be a SAHM but I would possibly prefer to work PT if I could. Unfortunately student loan debt and the fact that my income pays more than half our bills won't allow that. (I'm the breadwinner, but hoping H gets a promotion and hefty raise this winter). Luckily, I work three 12 hr days which means less time away from LO.

  • I am currently not happy in my job so I plan to look for something closer to home that is also part-time.  I have no option of part-time work at my current job and my commute is at least an hour each way.  After my 12 weeks of ML, I hope to find something that will allow me to work 20ish hours a week closer to home.  I'm really hoping this plan works because I can't imagine leaving my baby after ML to come back to this place.

  • I'm leaving the 1st of March to SAH. My oldest will be in school, and with getting her to school in the am, and my commute, it's just not feasible for me to work anymore. Not to mention, my mom is my childcare, and I think a 3rd newborn is too rough on her! My MIL will probably be moving in with us sometime next year, so I anticipate I'll go back to work once she takes over on the home front.

  • Going back to work after being on maternity leave for a year with B, was te hardest thing I have ever had to do. Sending him to daycare is still a challenge for me and it's been over a year! I hate it, so I can't imagine how hard it'll be with 2 LO's. I know that I am either going back to work or staying home, going somewhere else, probably not.
We will have a year to figure it all out though.

You gotta keep working so you can afford more cameras for DH.  :)

I'm hoping to stay at home depending on how my husband's job is going, but I like my job, so if I have to work, I'd be happy to stay where I am.
