Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Allergies?

My son is almost 9 months old and has literally had a cough, runny nose and sneezing since he was born.. I keep taking him in and they keep telling me he has a cold, he recently started getting red rough patches all over his body he gets these off and on sometimes they looks really bad.. I'm starting to wonder if he's allergic to something.. I have no idea what it could be though.. Wondering if I should take him in for an allergy test? Has anyone else experienced this? If so what was the outcome?

Re: Allergies?

  • Well, they don't really have an immune system at birth so that's probably why they don't think it's an allergy.

  • I would just so you know. My DD is allergic to milk and soy. She never had a cold of any other symptoms except hives so hers was obvious. When did she start getting red patches? I would keep a food journal so you can see if its connected with something else.
Is it excezma or more like dry/winter skin? My DD has been getting some chapped skin now that its super cold
  • BF or FF???  DD is BF and is allergic to dairy and nuts.  She gets congested and dry skin patches off and on.

Just found out that our DDs "cold", that has had two rashes that only showed up for an hour or so each, is an allergic reaction to indoor mold.

We moved into this apartment three months before she was born so we only started showing symptoms of a mold allergy at the change of seasons around the same time DD did.

We have some visible mold and some hidden mold. We're cleaning it up and we bought some house plants but if it doesn't work to fix our symptoms we're moving!

I hope you figure it out! GL.

Yes babies have allergies! I don't think an allergist will test a baby that young though, you will just have to figure it out unfortunately by trying to eliminate possible allergens and see if it gets better. I have multiple allergies and was concerned for my LO but my allergist told me they will not test infants because there are too many false positives. They advised to just monitor her for any reactions. Turns out LO is allergic to dogs, we discovered that at 3 months old, her symptoms were a cold that didn't go away and eczema on her upper body. It was definitely easier to figure out than a food allergy, we spent a week away from home in a dog free house and the symptoms went away. Came back home and it returned. We have since moved to a new house without the hairy dogs and she is allergy free. Hopefully you can identify what is bothering your baby, but no you aren't crazy.

  • Thanks ladies! By the way he is formula fed and has been since birth.. I just cannot put my finger on what it could be.. The rashes are so random and the cold symptoms have been present since birth.. We haven't changed his formula or done anything different that would make me think it's something like that.. We don't have any pets.. I'll have to do some more thinking on what I could possibly be
