June 2014 Moms

Cloth diapers.

I know it is early, but I'm just trying to research cloth diapers. Which are your favorites? I want to be able to watch for sales and slowly stock up. :)

Re: Cloth diapers.

  • In the newborn stage we use Clotheez prefolds and workhorses with Thirsties Dup wraps as covers. We also use Bumgenius All In One, newborn. We loved both! Now she wears Bumgenius Freetimes during the day and Clotheez workhorses with Thirsties covers for night time. A lot of the places I buy from typically have Black Friday sales. Green Mountain Diaper is where I get all of my Clotheez diapers and Mom's Milk Boutique for all the others! Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

  • @emandjp thank you! So green mountain will have Black Friday sales? I feel silly for wanting to get them already but they add up pretty quickly and I figure any discount helps!
  • They may, Mom's Milk Boutique definitely will. MMB also had an Earth Day sale which was when I bought all my Bumgenius for 25% off. I would check the websites now and maybe get on their email list to start scoping out sales. :)

The Science Babies debuted 5/6/14 @ 34 weeks
  • I didn't start with cloth until DD was about 3 and a half months old so we went straight to one sizes. We use a combination of BumGenius v 4.0 (pockets) and freetimes and elementals. Love all our BGs. Not sure about Black Friday sales. I will be looking too in order to build the stash a bit since I will have two under two come June.
  • My siggy link has info on what I like.  I would suggest not buying a ton of any one thing until you find out what you like.  I hate microfiber for example; some folks love it.  For newborns, I primarily use Green Mountain Diaper pre-folds with thirsties covers and sunseedlings fitted at night.  For older babies and toddlers, I like Peachy Green and GroVia AIOs for days and Sustainable Babyish snapless fitteds with a stacinator cover at night.
  • I really appreciate all the help! We should start a post for all the Black Friday/cyber Monday deals we find.

@ncbelle Ps I am not sure what the "siggy" is... I have seen it mentioned a lot and assume that it is a signature and since I only use the app on my phone it must not show. I'll log on to the computer later today.
  • I would also not but a ton of anything until the baby gets here. I used prefolds and thirsties covers until ds was about 6 months and then switched to Kawaii brand. Prefolds and covers didn't stand the wiggly baby diaper change...too much work to wrestle him into them! I would put aside x amount of money each month to save up for diapers and only buy one or two of a couple different types now. When you know what works best for your baby, you'll have the money to buy an entire stock and you'll feel good about what you're buying. Good luck!!
  • I am planning on going with a diaper service for the first 8 weeks pp. Reason being I won't have to invest in nb diapers/prefolds and I will be having a csection, so I am unsure about the recovery time and the idea of doing diaper laundry for two kids during that time makes me tired.

For my dd, I prefer Twinkie Tush (fitteds) but my husband prefers bum genius 4.0 and freetimes. I like fitteds at night too with wool.

My dd is 15 months and I just now nailed down a nighttime routine that works. Point being, a lot of CDing is trial and error. I started off with some BG, fuzzibunz and cheapies from zulily and went from there.
  • I went with a diaper service for the first month. It was cheaper than a newborn stash and they washed the diapers :). After that he fit into one size. My favorites are Kawaii, Bungenius, Fuzzibunz oerfect size (I no not like their one size at all) and rumparooz. My least favorite are Alva (cute but constant leak issues), Charlie banana, and one WAHM diaper (bought off etsy). I have other brands too but those are the ones that stick out the most.

We have a couple Kawaii NB that we loved.  I think I'm going to buy more for this kid.  We have 18 OS Fuzzibunz that we have used from NB on.  I noticed yesterday that they're starting to leave elastic marks on her with the largest setting, and she's only 25 pounds... Not sure what we're going to do about that.

Edit: Aaaand my husband just reminded me that we tightened the elastic for her skinny legs as a NB. And I think he's not paying attention.

  • Everyone seems to find different things that work best for their baby, but here is what worked for us:
Disposable in the newborn stage.  You change diaps a ton.  They are messy with breatmilk poo.  For us with baby so small and still figuring life out disposable was easiest. I think we'll plan on this again or a service.

Then we cloth diapered from about 3mos-potty trained (24mos).  My absolute favorites are GroVia.  1) the shell grows with baby, no need to buy multiple sizes 2) if baby just pees you only have to wash the inside, meaning your covers don't take a ton of wear.  My covers are in GREAT shape 3) they fit us well 4) they are cute.  Seriously love GroVia.  They are $$ but worth it IMO.  Also they will likely have a sale after Thanksgiving.

Next favorite were BumGenius pocket diaps.  Cotton Babies is where I get them (we have a store locally but they are also online and super helpful!) But my covers didn't hold up as well because you have to wash every time.

We never did find a good overnight option as my DS has always slept for long stretches and would wet through. So we used disposable overnights.
