Cloth Diapering

Broccoli Bum

So, I'm part of the de-lurkers and I thought since I'm here I might as well ask one of those pesky questions.

DD is 9 months and I've been cloth diapering since she was eight weeks.

I've noticed in the past few months that when my face is anywhere near her bum I get a whiff of broccoli. You know that smell when you walk into a kitchen and someone has overcooked broccoli?

I thought it was maybe related to what she's been eating (i.e. broccoli) but yesterday she was in seventh gen disposables going to the paediatrician and didn't smell, despite copious amounts of broccoli the night before.

I use mostly prefolds and covers. It's not ammonia and it doesn't smell like a barnyard to me.

Any ideas? Could it be a wash issue or maybe I should just keep my face at a minimum distance at all times?

Thanks

Re: Broccoli Bum

  • It sounds normal to me. As to why it didn't smell in the disposable...was she wet at that time?

  • By the time we got home she was quite wet so I was surprised, it had urine smell but not the broccoli.

I've had very little exposure to other babies so my evaluation of how she smells is definitely suspect!

    Thanks!
  • Broccoli smell, mean barndyarn, they can also smell like a wet old carpet. You may need to strip them. I usually boild all my inserts.
