BLW is freaking me out

LO has been reaching for food off my plate for a month now, so I decided to put a big spear of banana in front of him in his high chair to see what would happen. Sure enough, he reached for it, put it in his mouth, and started eating. The kid LOVES bananas. To all you other BLW mamas, how do you get over the fear of choking? I had to stop myself from grabbing it from him. Maybe I should mash it up next time?

  • I was all about BWL at 6 months but 1) my DH read some stuff and got cold feet because of the choking and 2) we ended up starting a little after 5 months (day 3 for us today), so we ended up going with the puree route.  However, when I was preparing for BWL, I read that you should utube and watch BWL gagging v. choking videos to visually familiarize yourself with the difference between the two.  and like pp said, infant CPR.

  • I agree with @lavonnallama, jack just kind of started chewing, like it was an automatic reflex.
  • We waited until 8 months with DS1 to be sure he had the tongue thrust reflex gone and could sit up on his own. He did gag a bit but he sometimes still does at 3.5 when he takes too big a bite.

There are self feeders where you put food inside a mesh pocket. Keeps them from taking too big a bite. It might help you feel more comfortable.

I am a paranoid parent and hate when I have to leave DS1 eating so I can quick go to the bathroom or change a diaper. We work our morning around so he is supervised when he eats breakfast.
  • Baby's gag reflex is further forward in their mouth than ours which helps prevent choking. BLW says there aren't any more cases of choking with BLE than there is with baby food. Not sure if it true or not but that fact helps calm me!!! We will be doing both bc LO goes to daycare

  • We don't give j spears or anything, I just mash up banana with avocado and leave little chunks in it for him to get used to. It's less stressful lol.
  • We did pureed sweet potato yesterday for the first time and she LOVED it so much I baked her a sweet potato today to see how she would handle a spear of it. She took huge chunks off and gagged twice and looked like she swallowed a piece that was probably too big for her, so it kinda scared the crap out of me. lol... soooooo we might stick with purees a bit longer and re-try the spear in a few weeks.... (we were going to wait until dec 1 for solids but she wanted our food so bad, so I gave in.)

  • The thing is, LO did so well with it. He bit off a piece, chewed, then swallowed. It just freaked me out. Has anyone tried one of these baby-safe feeders? https://www.amazon.ca/Mesh-Teething-Baby-Feeder-Feeding/dp/B000056JCYkanga1622Wed220857 is this what you were talking about?

  • We use the mesh feeders so DD can feed herself with out me being so stressed. They work but are a huge PITA to clean. I'm sticking with purees until 6-7months. I wouldn't mash but maybe cut into tiny chunks.
