Mono/di - New OB?

Hello all!  I'm new here and 17 weeks along with mono/di twins.  At my last OB appointment my doctor mentioned she isn't comfortable delivering mono/di twins.  Did anyone else need to find a new OB because they didn't have di/di twins?  I have a separate MFM, who doesn't deliver, and she was a little confused about this as well.  Just wanted to see what other's have experienced.

Re: Mono/di - New OB?

  • I was lucky that we found twins/suspected mo/mo (actually mo/di) early on, because we found our current OB that way. Our initial OB only did singletons, but with my miscarriage history we found twins at 11 weeks and had to switch.  It's not quite the same, but it's similar.

I would talk to your MFM and see whom they recommend you switch to using.  I know my MFM has been phenominal - even with the myriad of complications we've had.
  • We didn't have to switch so I stayed with my midwife/OB team for my entire pregnancy and only saw MFM three or four times with our mo/dis.

Does she not do deliveries for twins at all? I could maybe understand delivering only mo/di and di/dis, but that seems a little odd to me since you are being seen by MFM as well. Definitely get a referral from your MFM.

  • My OB was originally okay with delivering my boys as long as we had no problems, but the other OBs that rotate on call duties with him were not comfortable with keeping me as a patient.  I ended up seeing a group of MFMs only starting at about 17 weeks.

  • We knew twins before we found the ob so it wasn't an issue.
But I would be happy the ob knows their comfort level and declines beforehand. Id rather not have someone who has any uncomfort with it!
  • Hmm - My health insurance doesn't allow me to change OBs after a certain time so it seems very unhelpful of her to mention this NOW at 17 weeks.

I am di/di and seeing my OB and MFM. I wanted to switch OBs but it was difficult, and my MFM said as long as I don't mind a c-section, my OB would do just fine.

  • Weird!  Especially since you are also being seen my the MFM.  Wonder why she's uncomfortable?  As long as the MFM is monitoring the progress of the babies to look for complications unique to these pregnancies, I can't see why it would be different than delivering di/di's.  Maybe she isn't experienced enough with them?  I'd switch if my doc wasn't feeling confident anyway.

  • My OB had no issues with delivering my Mo/di (which he thought were di/di) twins. I would definitely switch considering your OB said she's not comfortable. That would make me nervous.

  • Thanks for the feedback!  We are definitely switching and going to get a rec from my MFM.  My OB says they do di/di all the time, but was nervous about mo/di.  I just thought it was odd, so wanted to check in with you all!

  • I think it is great she said something,  I would much rather her tell me it made her nervous than go through with delivery and have something go wrong due to nerves.  Glad you're switching, good luck!

  • I would find a new MFM. I've never heard of an MFM that doesn't deliver. My MFM dr was in L&D all day! Don't worry about your OB they probably won't deliver you anyway. I'd find a new one just in case. Good luck!
  • I think the MFM vs. OB delivery depends on the practice. Mine does it, but only if the OB is no longer comfortable or if there are other problems.
