Breakthrough chicken pox

Anyone?

DS had odd spots on his shoulder area and on his lower back. I thought leaf mold allergy (he jumps in the leaves at school) and DH thought maybe an insect (although there were probably 15-20 spots). They were not too inflamed, just a little raised...

We keep going to chicken pox although he is vaccinated. So maybe just a mild presentation? We are waiting till the morning to see if it is worse/better/same and going from there.

Anyone have an experience with breakthrough varicella?

Re: Breakthrough chicken pox

  • My oldest son who was vaccinated as a baby against varicella, developed a real case of chicken pox when he was 14. It ran a short course and was very mild compared to what happened to me when I had it as a child. I think it is definitely possible for chicken pox to occur after vaccination due to waning immunity. I think that nowadays they recommend a booster for older kids...

  • DD had some weird spots right after her 4-year chicken pox booster that the doctor said might be breakthrough or a reaction to the shot, or just a random coincidental viral rash.  I guess that is not much help, but we did see a doctor about it and kind of got the, "eh, if she feels OK otherwise it could be a lot of things but nothing to worry about," response.
