Multiples

Hope someone can help, TTM about BF and FF from the start

Hi,

I'm NOT expecting multiples, but I'm running out of ideas for where to post this question and get answers :( I'm guessing that moms of twins might have advice about the question below since you've maybe had similar feeding plans because of not wanting to feed both babies at once? If this question is out of line on the multiples board I'm sorry...

I am pregnant with #2 and don't want to exclusively BF at all. I'm hoping there's a way I can BF for the first day or two and then introduce a formula bottle feeding every few days until baby is getting BM only for the first morning feed and formula the rest of of day. I'm not overly concerned about how long he goes on getting that first BM feeding (I'll be happy if it's 4-6 weeks, longer would be great but I'm aware that supply issues would maybe arise and that's fine). Secrets of a Baby Whisperer suggests that introducing a Haberman bottle within the first few weeks can help to prevent nipple confusion. Any tips on getting this type of feeding plan to work? Has anyone does this?

  • I've been ff and bf from the start with my girls. They get about 50/50 right now but I'll be decreasing bm in about a month. They've had no problem with nipple confusion and will take a breast, bottle, or paci with no trouble.

I think it just depends on your baby whether they will have trouble with nipple confusion. Also, I had a lactation consultant tell me that people with flatter or inverted nipples are more likely to encounter nipple confusion.

  • My boys started on bottles in NICU but switch back and forth to breast easily. They did have a hard time staying latched because they are preemies so I used nipple shields at first.

  • We had the girls doing both breast feeding and bottle feeding from the start. It been fine. Just start early and t becomes their norm. And we use all types of bottles.
