Cloth Diapering

Prefold Tips?

I have a little stash of prefolds and covers and so far, it has been a disaster and I have been avoiding them in favor of my pocket diapers.  What happens is that when LO poops, it gets all over the leg holes.  It doesn't come out, but it renders the cover unusable more than once.  I have Thirsties covers in XS and OsoCozy size 1 prefolds.  I have tried the prefolds with the Snappis and also just folded as I have seen how to do online, with more absorbency at the front by folding it over there to fit the diaper (for a girl) and the little "pocket" at the back which is supposed to catch the poo (yeah right!)  I don't know if I am explaining it well enough.  I have also tried it just folded over in thirds just for the heck of it too.  I would really like to use these, but I am starting to avoid them more and more because they just seem like such a mess.  Help?!  Also, I have Bummis whisper wraps in a bigger size to use when LO gets a bit bigger, so I would really like to learn how to use the prefolds...

There's an awesome YouTube video by one of the diaper manufacturers that is awesome at showing tips for folding/using prefolds.  I'm at work & YouTube is blocked or I'd look for it and link it for you.  I want to say it's by Babykicks.  It's like a 4 part series and she uses a teddy bear to demonstrate.

The biggest help I got from it was 1.) You can use jelly roll with pretty much any prefold fold.  Jelly roll is AWESOME for keeping poo in.  2.) The trick to avoiding leg hole leaks is to pull the back & front tab "up" towards baby's head before fastening with the snappi.  It does take a little practice juggling baby and the snappi while pulling up and getting it tight enough.

    HTH!

ETA: Oh the other thing I thought of is that you might be using prefolds that are a little too big to get a really good, tight fit. I know when G first goes up a size I have a harder time snappi'ing tight until he grows into them a bit.  So just just keep trying them every week or two.

  • I agree with the above comment.

We use the angel wiing fold with a snappy.  When I pull the side "wings" over I point them slightly up towards the bellybutton to get a tighter leg fit.  DD has only pooped on the cover a handful of times, and that was when I was too lazy to check the legs.  I have four covers (two litewraps from GMD which I LOVE) and two BBs.

I had a really hard time with containing the newborn runny poo with prefolds. Even the jelly roll was hit or miss. My fix was changing covers to Swaddlebees\Blueberry. They really fit at her legs. Now she is older and the poop isnt explosive, so most covers work well. I also bought Workhorses, which I love.

  • Thanks for the tips, especially the ones about the jelly roll fold and the snappi angle...

  • Yep, I have been testing the jelly roll with the modified way of doing the snappi all day long and I have to say, 100% success!  I <3 the CD board!  Thank you.  Now my prefolds will get equal love.
