3rd Trimester

low lying placenta at 29 weeks

Hi there - is there anyone on here who had low lying placenta at 28/29 weeks, but movement of the placenta away from the cervix by mid-late third trimester? I'm feeling really bummed out because my recheck today showed my placenta hasn't moved at all (it is still 1.5 cm away from my cervix and needs to move another 1.5, I guess). I'm worried about why it hasn't moved at all (I just had the misfortune of reading about placenta accreta and I really need to get off google) and secondly, the whole c-section issue (my last pregnancy was a vaginal birth and I was really looking forward to another). Any input much appreciated.

Re: low lying placenta at 29 weeks

  • At 27 weeks mine was still low lying. I go back next week to see if it's moved anymore. I know people have said theirs didn't move until 34 weeks. I hope yours moves. Is your baby head down yet?

  • Not sure about the head. I think I was so preoccupied by the fact it didn't move that I forgot to ask. It doesn't matter this early, does it?
  • I also have low-lying and am at 29 weeks - I have another check in about 4 more weeks.  Doc said that they expect it to resolve during 3rd tirmester because the uterus grows a lot and it grows upward which will pull the placenta up.  Good luck!
  • They told me I have a low lying placenta at 26 weeks, 6mm from the os. I go back at 34 weeks, so fingers crossed it's moved. Most do move, but get into google scholar instead, because from what I've read, current medical research is supportive of vaginal birth at 2cms. Most women are perfectly safe at that distance.
  • Don't worry too much! I had a low lying with my first, did another ultrasound at 36 weeks and it had moved up! Had a super easy, super fast delivery at 41 weeks (had to kick her out, lol)

  • I know it might sound silly but told my placenta it needed to move everyday for 8 weeks. I had a low lying placenta at 20 weeks and I just had my recheck- thankfully mine moved up quite a bit. It probably didn't make a difference 'talking' to my placenta but, heck, it didn't/couldn't hurt. The worst you can do is make yourself feel silly for talking to a placenta lol and the best is that it moves. Good luck!

  • I just read that once the baby is head down the placenta has a better chance to move up. So don't lose hope it will move.

  • I was told I had a complete previa at 18 weeks, no movement at 22 weeks but at 28 weeks it has started to move in the right direction. I was told by an MFM that most don't move until at least 28 weeks. Being that you are 29 weeks hopefully you still have a lot of time for it to move. I know it's hard but try not to stress- I'm trying to accept that it is something I have zero control over!

  • I had complete previa at 20weeks. My visit this week I'm 28weeks and now only have a low lying placenta 1.5cm away from the cervix. My doctor is extremely confident that it will be pulled upward further as the uterus expands. We grow so much during the last few weeks of pregnancy so don't lose hope. I don't want a c-section but I'll do whatever is best for my baby when the time comes. :). I hope everyone else continues to have good luck and get the results they are hoping for!
  • I had convinced myself that I was doomed for a c- section and at my 30 week check, my placenta had finally moved! It could still happen!
  • Mine hasn't yet. It needs to move two more inches. My doctor is still confident it will resolve itself. I'll be 28 weeks tomorrow.
