Wool Problems

I'm hoping someone can help me with my wool because I really want to love it. I have 2 covers: 1 Disana and 1 S'bish. I have lanolized them several times, and they only seem to make it a few nights before leaking. I have been using CJ's wool wash, so maybe I need to use something different? The last few times I have used several of the suggested "nickel sized drops" in the wet zone. I usually soak them between 12-18 hours and flip them inside out about half way through. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Also, what do you do on the changing pad when you use wool? I take the cover off and set aside, but then I'm left with a pretty saturated fitted directly on the changing pad cover, whereas usually I have PUL down between.

Re: Wool Problems

  • Do you have prefolds? You can lay one under the baby before taking the wool off, and then toss the prefold and fitted into the wetbag.

I would guess your wool is either not getting fully dry, or needs to be dry lanolized. Although I am not a wool expert.

  • I think you need to use regular lanolin too. Dry lanolizing afterwards couldn't hurt either.

  • I use the CJ's to wash my wool, but then I melt some lanolin in hot water with a drop or two of baby soap to really get it good. I also soak mine all day or all night usually. Also, I agree with ITK that your wool needs to get all the way dry before you put it back on LO. When we use wool, I make sure to rotate my two covers so they each get 2 days to dry. I also turn them inside-out while they're drying. Oh, I also keep a flannel receiving blanket folded in half on top of my changing pad. We only have one pad cover right now, so the blanket has saved me from a couple of poo emergencies, as well.

  • I have 2 Disana covers.  I use regular lanolin and Eucalan Wool Wash.  I have a small sink I wash/lanolize in.  I only leave it in the water for 30 minutes (I flip the cover after 15 minutes).  It does take nearly 24 hours for it to completely dry.  Have you tried looking at a lanolizing how-to video on youtube?  That helped me a lot!

  • I use CJ's to do an initial wash and soak, then do regular lanolin and a drop of CJ's and let it soak a few hours. I lanolize maybe every other month doing it this way.

I think that my problem must be that I've only been using the CJs. What kind of lanolin do you use?
  • I like the sheepish grins lanolin. You can use as much lanolin, but the main thing is the amount of water that you will use.

  • I use the Now brand. I buy it at natural grocers. It is by far the cheapest I've found in town.
