Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Babywise

Anyone tried the Babywise sleep training? I got great reviews about it from a friend and how her child was sleeping 12 hours a night when they were my daughters age. I ordered the book but wanted to see what others had to say about it. Plus my lo is 7 months and I know the book starts training as a newborn. How will it work now that my lo is 7 months and has some bad sleep patterns?

Re: Babywise

  • Babywise is one of the only methods/books called out by the American Academy of Pediatrics as being harmful to a baby's well being and causing failure to thrive situations. I would recommend against it. I'll post a link as soon as it loads... My iPad is being crazy slow.

This link mostly speaks the dangers of their feeding program. However, I wouldn't trust any part of a book that advocates methods that are as detrimental as their feeding program. https://aapnews.aappublications.org/content/14/4/21.abstract Also, there are often misconceptions of how babies should sleep. Most adults wake during the night so why shouldn't children? Here's a link about what is normal for baby sleeping patterns. When I started to understand what is and isn't normal, it helped me chill a lot and simply enjoy and help my baby where I could. https://evolutionaryparenting.com/normal-infant-sleep-part-i/. PS- please pardon the double post... I seem to be having technical difficulties.
  • check out chronicles of a baby wise mom blog, I found it extremely helpful! Good luck!

  • I took the eat-play-sleep schedule from babywise and it worked out great. I started when my son was 3 months old and just kept with that pattern and he's been sleeping through the night (starting at 8-9 hours until around 5 months now 11-12 hours). I read the book knowing that it was regarded as too strict (and it seems so to me) but that pattern really seems to work; just modify to what your child needs. I'll nurse extra when I think he needs it but just make sure he doesn't fall asleep when eating....hope this helps.
  • WHAT?!?? I cannot even finish that article. They wrote a book about how to beat your child?????

  • Oh Jesus. Babywise is just fine. You have to do it with these caveats: always put your childs needs in terms of food and sleep first.  Don't' deprive them of food or sleep in favor of a schedule, just do it with moderation and use it as a gentle guide.  People get WAY too worked up over this topic, and certainly the authors of babywise (a Christian team, I believe) did not write a book about how to BEAT your child. Gimme a break.

  • Some babies are just good sleepers-- the correlation with baby wise methods may just be a coincidence.
  • I really like the Babywise series, but more for some of the parenting/behavior ideas, especially in the sequels meant for toddler+ age, than for infant sleep stuff. Because your looking for help now at 7 months, your baby is technically a pretoddler by Babywise standards so you'd want to look at the Babywise II book.

But I presonally found Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child to be the best fit for me for sleep training advice. I've referred to it for my two very different girls and it has been helpful for both of them. It helped me get them both to a 3 naps/day 12 hours straight of sleep/night schedule by 7 months, and I have 2 completely different sleepers.
