No-no's for last name Brown

So with a last name like Brown, I find there are tons of off limit names. (Charlie, Leroy, you get the picture).

Here are a few names that I'm on the fence about weirdness. Tell me your thoughts.

James Brown
Gabriel Brown (nn Gabe, runs together with Brown)
Scarlett Brown
Ruby Brown (double color names)
Iris Brown

Ps. These names could be "weird"for a variety of reasons. Some are famous people, some just don't pair well, etc.

Re: No-no's for last name Brown

  • The only combo I would stay away from is double colors like Scarlett Brown. I don't think James Brown is a big deal.

  • I also wouldn't do a double color name, the others don't flow great, but it wouldn't be as weird as Ruby Brown or Jade Brown, ya know?

  • I think you're ok with Gabriel Brown and Iris Brown, although I don't love how Gabriel/Gabe Brown sounds and Iris is NMS. I personally wouldn't do the others you named

  • I personally would stay away from James Brown, or any clear celebrity Browns like pp mentioned Chris Brown.
Color names are tricky too, it would be best to steer clear of those too.

Going with a less traditional name may provide a better likelihood that the name is not notoriously familiar.

  • With the same last name I too face some name issues. We have a Stella and a Georgia. This baby we have planned on using Ruby, I was worried about the double color issue but not a single person has brought it up. They rebut the name for other reasons, but not that!
A few that I love and can't use, basil and sage. My DH hates any B names fearing the will be nn "BB" I think that's stupid.

  • No double color names other than that I think almost anything will work with Brown.

  • I'd stay away from double colors (even Scarlett, that's a color to me), and anything outdoorsy. Iris Brown sounds like you're talking about a dead flower.

My husband's name is on your list. He get lot of comments about being the Godfather of Soul :), but people never forget his name and there are TONS of people with the same name. I also think that kids are never going to really get the reference.

The only name that was ever completely off the list for us was Charles (Charlie), which is a shame because it's a family name for me.

  • First no-no name I think of is Cole Brown. As a nurse, I am far too familiar with nasty "Code Browns" and Cole Brown would make my brain want to say Code Brown.....

My last name is Brown, and my FIL is James Brown. I always thought that was pretty silly. I think One syllable names sound weird with Brown, though just because of the length not the name itself. Most people will say double color names, but I actually really love Violet Brown, Scarlett Brown, Olive Brown, etc. The color thing doesn't bother me. I think just names of famous people (like Charlie or James) would be the only thing I avoid.

And I think that crossing of nature names because of the thought of a dead iris is silly. My DD is Basil Brown and not one person has mentioned a dead Basil plant.

My daughter's initials are BIB and we don't call her BB. Though sometimes we call her B-squared.

    B-squared is awesome.

The first time I saw you on the boards I fell in love with Basil. I wanted to use it with dd#1

Oh and I LOVE B squared!

  • My husband is Bobby Brown. His father and grandfather were Robert Brown as well. We're naming our son Robert, but calling him by his middle name. Bobby wanted his middle name to be Holden...imagine Holden Brown? Yikes! We have to stay away from any color names too.

I think James Brown is fine. We like Charlotte Brown for a girl, going by Charlie. I also love Holly and Penny, but it's a little weird with the last name!
  • My last name is Brown too. I think color names are out and 1 syllable names don't flow well to me. James, Chris, and Bobby would be scratched off the list as well.
  • I think Gabriel is fine but I'd personally avoid the color names and a name that would make it into a celebrity name. Also, Iris will lend itself to a very offensive name in the late teen/college years. I'd hate to saddle my daughter with "brown eye" down the road.
  • I know a Gabrielle Brown; pretty sure you're fine with Gabriel.

  • Murphy Brown.
    Or Murphy in general
  • With a name like Brown, I wouldn't worry too much about famous people with the same name. Anyone famous now will be ancient history to our kids, and it's inevitable that there will be someone famous (or infamous) that comes up in their generation. You just can't predict these things. This is also one of those times when I could justify having a little "fun" with a first name.
