Padsicles

I didn't make any with DD, but I want to this time. All of the homemade versions seem to add lavender oil and aloe vera gel. I'm really too lazy to go out and buy this extra stuff, so are any of you just using the witch hazel?

I don't really know why I'm asking...I'll probably just use the witch hazel, but hey, why not start a thread about padsicles, right?

  • Loading the player...
  • I just read the recipe where they use aloe vera gel and witch hazel as well as lavender oil. I have so much of that stupid aloe vera gel that I've never used and finally I have a good way to use it up :)
  • I have just used ice packs, tucks pads and hemi cream.  They make me happy enough.  LOL!

  • So, perhaps a dumb question, but when padsicles start to melt don't they leak everywhere?  I've really been trying to comprehend how this would work without causing wet spots in my pants and where I sit.

  • I am allergic to lavender so obviously I am not putting anything lavender down there. I just left it out. I got the witch hazel with aloe vera in it and then used more aloe vera gel.

Pads are absorbent. That's why we use them for that TOM
So another question... If they're absorbing all the stuff we add to them... How will they absorb all the stuff the pads need to absorb to serve their original purpose? Are we overthinking this?
  • They do actually recommend sitting on a towel when using padsicles. If you are having a really heavy flow leakage could occur.
  • Maybe I've missed this, but is there a reason to make your own instead of just getting some of the "Tucks Pads"/wipes to use? I guess I'm just too lazy... I'll throw my tucks in the fridge and be done with it.

  • Why no alcohol in the gel? Tucks pads have alcohol in them...

I think because alcohol stings on cuts, and a lot of ladies will probably have a bit of tearing.

Because they're cold and frozen and that feels good on swollen vag.

Oh ok, that makes sense then. I didn't know if I was missing something else other than this.

  • Are Tucks pads actual pads that you wear, like what you wear during your period, or are they more like medicated wipes?
  • They are medicated wipes, but I laid some in the maxi pad I was wearing all the time and changed them frequently
  • Sorry I missed some of the conversation....it was bed and bath time for DD.

I had a hard time with the tucks pads staying in place on the pad. @dbucks, they're the round medicated wipes.

  • This might be a dumb question too- but where do you get witch hazel? Is it at any old pharmacy, or do you have to go to health store? And if it's in a pharmacy, what section would you find it in?

Yep and I think it's near the alcohol and peroxide at mine. I can't remember exactly.

Thanks! I hate walking into a store and having to walk around to 5 different sections to find the product I'm looking for ... Cuz I'm too proud to ask for help lol. Making padsicles is definitely on my agenda too!

ETA- my phone changed "padsicles" to "passively" ... Apparently "padsicles" isn't a real word! ;)

Not just that it feels good, but that it keeps the swelling down which will keep the amount of pain you experience afterwards down. The more you swell, the more blood to the area, more blood = more bruising and discomfort. The L&D nurse who taught the class I went to said basically treat your vag like a sports injury (this helped drive the point home for the dad's especially I think) ice ice ice for the first 24hrs after labour. If you forget to bring your own padsicles the nurses at my hospital teach dad to make you an ice pack using the ice chips and medical gloves. Then after icing for 24 hrs, use heat, the best being a warm sitz bath if you can.

  • Just made mine this weekend. Thayers brand makes alcohol free witch hazel with aloe and lavender! I found it at a GNC store but if you Google it there are plenty of online retailers.
  • The Peri bottle (aka squirt bottles) are your friend. I personally hated the Tucks pads. They just kept things swampy down there which was already too swampy given the pp bleeding. I am a fan of the icepacks. MM was right though, after 24hrs you want sitz baths and heat. Ice is only good for the first 24, 20 min on, 20 min off.

That peri bottle was my best friend for a long time. Fill it with warm water & squirt while you pee. It's the only way to roll post partum in my opinion!
