"oh that's interesting"

the name thread is entertaining but does anyone have a real live child with an "oh that's interesting" name? our sons name is Oakley and we get "that's cool" most of the time but a lot of "oh.... interesting"s too. :) we don't care though. we think he is an Oakley and he is so cool. HIs middle name is Knox which I also love :)

  • Hubby loves the name Oakley for a boy :) If we have a girl, I really want to name her Hadley, which does not get a lot of love on the name board. But I don't care.

  • I haven't gotten "oh that's interesting" but people ask me if we are Jewish a lot. My sons name is Judah. whatevs.
  • we were in love with the name Judah and I mentioned to a friend---
guess what? a few months later her baby boy was born: Judah. :) haha. fun.
  • Unique names are the BEST! My first name is Liberty and I love it! My husband and I will be picking out a very unique name for our little baby. ❤️ I love Oakley by the way!
  • Our guys name is Kainen (Kay-nen )and we get a lot of " oh .... Ive never heard that name before" LOL but we knew when we named him that that we would get a lot of that. My Nana actually said " why would you name him something so weird??" right to my face...THAT was unexpected LOL After that I feel like I can handle any comment.

I couldnt imagine him in any other name now :)

I like "weird" names too but DH strongly, does not. Both our kids have traditional names so this next one probably will too.

I get to live through my sisters. Their kids have cool "weird" names!

ETA: I also wanted to add that most of our friends have "uniquely" named kids and they all thought the name Henry was weird. :P

  • My sons name is Kash. My husband picked it out and it grew on me:-) I love it now. Most people say that it's a cool name when we tell them.

  • My son's name is not weird, but until recently, was fairly uncommon. He is lincoln. Now, one of the girls from Teen Mom just named her son Lincoln. My worst dream come true, LOL. Feels worse to me than when Kristen Bell named her DAUGHTER Lincoln. Popular and classic names are totally NMS so the popularity increasing does not make me happy. Oh well. We tried. When I was pregnant nobody had anything nice to say about the name on the boards but oh well, lol. My parents even called me after he was born and after we had signed his birth cert to try to get me to change it.

My son is Henry.... we always get asked if he was named after someone. Nope I just love old fashioned names.

I have to admit, I'm not a fan. Am totally one of those people that would respond with 'oh, thats an interesting name' mostly because I just don't understand it.

I like strong, traditional names. I think of what life I would want the  40year old to have, and what kind of name suits that. All babies names are cute, but how will the work professionally?

We tend towards classical names, or names with a classic feel to them, but shy away from the super popular names.

totally see what you mean but I am the 384729384849th katie in the world and the thought of naming my son something I know a ton of other people are named just bothers me. no- I am not a freaky mom that insists my child should stand out and be unique. I just think a name is incredibly important and most traditional/classic/common names fall flat to me. I do think about what the name will sound like professionally and I actually think it's a professional advantage to have a stand out name. all of this obviously IMO. I totally respect my friends that give traditional names-- it's just not for us. pretty much, the rule is that anything in the top 1000 is not for us. haha.

Sidenote: if you really are curious to know why his name is oakley, we named him after the bible verse Isaiah 61:3. ("they will be called oaks I righteousness, a planting for the display of the lords splendor.")
  • I like unique names but not unique spellings. I work with older adults, so most of the names we like were popular with babies in the 1920s and 1930s. You can get a lot of unique but still "traditional" names that way - Hilda, Mabel, Hazel, Ruth, Cecil, Mildred, Kermit, Frank, Ida, Zelda. DH has rejected most of these, but it's definitely a different pool of contenders than the top 100 list!

@jesus4life2 -  I like the meaning behind your son's name!

  • I'm sort of on both sides. My son's name is Ethan & daughter's name is Lily. Both "normal" & popular names. My name is Lindsey which when I was younger wasn't very common and the spelling is almost always questioned but my husbands name is Sohel & he wanted to name our kids a plain & normal name as his is very uncommon in the United States (while not uncommon in India where he was born). This baby will most likely have a regular name, even though I wouldn't mind a little something different. Just don't want it to be shortened into a nickname, that is what bugs me most about naming kids.

  • My name is Alecia (uh leesh uh) and people have always commented on the different spelling. It isn't that strange, it's just the Spanish version! When I was growing up, I was annoyed by the different spelling but now I love that it makes my name more unique. I don't always like unique spellings to names, but I do think it adds some character.

My son's name is Simeon (Sim-ee-on).. And my daughter's name is Amaria (A-ma-ree-uh).. We get a lot of "ohh that's so pretty and different" w/ their names. My name is Acrena (A-cree-nuh) and DH's is Keyaan (pronounced Keon). So we're planning on giving this baby a different name as well. We keep middle names simple though (mine and DD's is Elizabeth).
    **Edited for spelling.
  • We love the name Killian for a boy. It's a traditional Galiec name, we are Irish by heritage. When friends ask names we list off 3 or 4 and we always get "Killian? Really? I like the other names better." Well it's not your f-ing kid so I don't care what you like! Lol. We will see though we have not made any final decisions.'

That's my sisters name too with the exact same spelling! We've never met anyone else with the same spelling :-) when she was born my mom was put to sleep and my dad wrote her name, thus the spelling!

  • I love all the names everyone's named their kids!! I am head over heels in love with the name Kinsley for a girl but my bf hates it. Has no reason, just hates it lol. He keeps questioning why we can't just name it junior, no matter the gender. Its almost an everyday argument lol. I'm all for the name junior for a darn reason but not because he thinks it "sounds" cool lol. Such a wacko.
I loved the name Arabella until I seen it used on teen mom. Same with Bentley lol. And the name Maci has always been a top contender but because of teen mom I just can't let myself do it
  • @jacksoha That's cool! I've never actually met anyone with the same spelling, just heard of others. You know the singer Pink? Real name is Alecia. The spelling also came from my dad :), although it was more planned because he had a patient with the name and loved the unique spelling.

  • My name is Kamaria, it is Swahili, my mom picked it out of a baby name book and though it was pretty. I'm a blonde haired, blue eyed, pale skin Irish girl with an African name, so normally I get "huh, that's different. But it's pretty..." Kamie doesn't get such a weird response.

I know I'm a little late to the party but I have to ask - how is that pronounced? I can't figure it out.

  • My oldest son is named Ryker and we get a lot of questions about the backstory. A few people think we are star trek super fans (I didn't even know there was a character by the same name). Really I found it when we couldn't come up with a boy name that we could agree on and I didn't want to just name him Richard Jr. so I found Ryker as a German surname version of the name Richard. We new what we were using for middle names before we knew he was a boy. There was a lot of WTF reaction when DH wanted to name him Loki....it was quickly nixed. Naming our second son was much easier!

  • My DD is Sakura Nykole. No one liked her name at first except DH and I. Now no one can imagine it as anything else it's unique and so is she. It has caused one huge problem we can't figure out a name for this lil one!!
  • @colllydon Kieran could be a good option, too. FWIW I like Killian esp if you have a strong Irish heritage. I know a little Mairead (girl). Love her name!
  • My Godson's name is Ragnar. No joke. I have a pic of him in my office and the look i get when i say his name is priceless.
  • My dd's name is Stella and we get "oh that's and old fashioned name isn't it?" a lot! She is named for her great grandmother who died before she was born. If we have another girl it will be Cassidy and a boy will be Talon.
