Weight Gain

How much did ya'll gain during the first trimester? I'm currently 16 w and just recently went for my 2nd doc appt. At 11w I hadn't gained anything and now 5 weeks later I'm up 12lbs. The doctor said since I've been nauseous up until now, my appetite is bigger when I'm feeling good. I was reassured not to worry unless this becomes typical. Idk, though.

Re: Weight Gain

  • I didn't gain anything until 22 weeks. Then I was only up 5lbs. I managed to put on 30 more lbs between 22 weeks and 35w6d. Don't worry if your doc doesn't! :)

  • I go to the doctor on Thursday & I'm curious to see my weight gain. I didn't gain anything the first trimester. From weeks 14-18 I gained 6lbs. My appetite had definitely increased so curious to see how much I've gained the last 4 weeks. I wouldn't worry though if your doctor isn't concerned.
  • I gained 5lbs through 16w and then gained 2lbs a week from then on. I gained 60lbs by 34w and had 5 and 5 8 babies.

  • I'm 33wks and have gained 50lbs.. But nothing until 18 wks

  • I was worried in the beginning because I didn't gain anything at all and wasn't sick either- plus I had been eating every 45 mins! But then around 16/18 weeks I just suddenly put on 5lb, and have gained steadily since. At 23 weeks I'm up 15lb altogether but feel like it should be more. I'm having fraternal boys and I think they are just eating ALL my food right now! ;)
  • I had only gained 4 lbs at my 20 week appt.  Overall I only gained 17 lbs and my girls were healthy and 6lbs 13 oz and 6 lbs 9 oz

  • Thanks everyone! I just want to be as healthy as I can be but am finding it difficult when only certain foods will satisfy my hunger. Before I was pregnant it was easy to control my weight but I'm not sure what is "normal" and what isn't. Y'all helped a lot though, thanks!!!
  • I gained 5 lbs in the first tri, but then 45 more by 35 weeks. Overall weight gain will depend on a lot of different factors, though, and ditto everyone that if your doctor isn't worried, you shouldn't be either.

  • I don't remember exactly, but I think I gained about 4 or 5lbs in the first tri. I do remember specifically that at 20 weeks (when we found out it was twins, surprise!) I had gained 8lbs total, which is part of the reason why we were all so stunned to find I had two in there. I gained FAST from 20-24 weeks (hello stretch marks!). My time of biggest weight gain was between 20 and 28 weeks, then it really lightened up. I gained 29lbs overall by the time I delivered, and I was about 10lbs overweight when I got pregnant.

  • at 15w I was up 6lbs, but I am sure I am gaining a pound a week. I don't have an appt until Dec 2nd, and my scale at home is different than the scale at the office... I just jump on the one at home to make sure I am gaining weight, I haven't figured out the difference between the two.

  • I gained a lot, at least 20 pounds! I had bad ms and the only thing that helped was constantly eating carbs. As long as your dr is not worried don't stress about it. I wound up gaining a total of 86 pounds, I had pre e and lots of bloating. 3 months pp and I have lost 62 already.

  • I remember being up 22lbs at 20 weeks and gained 45 overall, only made it 34 weeks. I gained fast but have no stretch marks and have lost all the weight just 12 weeks PP. If you're hungry, your body is telling you to eat.

  • I selfishly love reading all these posts about losing all the weight almost right after delivering! I'm not obsessive about my weight, but being up 50lbs hurts my own feelings. lol

At 16w I had only gained 8lbs.  So I added 2 Ensure shakes for snacks between meals, and I gained 11 more lbs between then and my 20w appt.  By the end I gained 53 lbs and had 2 big, healthy babies.  With twins, depending on your size/health before pg, you typically should aim to gain around 45-50 lbs.

@MrsLee04 - what week did you deliver??

  • As you can tell, everyone is so, so different.  I started v. petite, gained 53 pounds, and lost it all by 4 mos pp.  Eat when you're hungry.  Try to eat healthy, but don't worry if you can't.  (I lived on milkshakes because of the morning sickness.)  And most of all remember that the weight gain will help them even if you feel like a cow:)
  • Oh, and I gained 3 pounds a week from 13-28 weeks.  Yes, that is 45 pounds in 15 weeks.

All of this exactly - I had a hard time gaining in the beginning and tried to follow the Dr. Luke book so added Ensure shakes, and caught up quickly. By 16 weeks I was up about 10, by 20 weeks I was up 20. At 31 weeks I am up about 43 lbs and hope to stay within the 45 = 50 range (pre-pregnancy I was 5'3" 140 lbs and a marathon runner).

  • I love hearing the variety from people! I feel like I am gaining a lot of weight, which is scary for me, but I also know that it is OK. I think the lesson from this thread is that your body is going to do what it is going to do. Keep the stories coming ladies!

Don't feel bad, I weighed as much as DH by the time I delivered! Once you have your babies and heal up you can work on loosing it, until then be healthy and try to enjoy it.

  • i'm 27 week and 3 days and have gained 35 pounds already.  That's as much as i gained my entire pregnancy with my daughter.  This time i'm pregnant with fraternal boys.  I've also been on restricted activity for the past month which may have contributed to an 11 pound weight gain in one month but oh well.  I'm small to begin with and lost weight quickly plus some after my daughter was born so I'm trying to just think of the weight gain as being what the boys need.  I'm glad to read that some people have heard gaining between 45-50 pounds is normal for twins because my ob told me 30-35 which i thought seemed pretty low...especially at the pace i've been going.
