Charity Playdate?

Hi - I have a 4 year old son and I'm trying to teach him about giving back and I thought the holidays were a perfect time to start a charitable tradition.  I'd eventually like to volunteer somewhere with him, but I feel like this year he may be a bit young to really "get it."  I was thinking instead of having a playdate w/ about 10 of his preschool friends and having them each bring a can good that we can donate to our local food pantry.  My idea was to host the playdate at our local indoor jumpy place and I'd pay for each child's ticket, however all of the parents can bring a can good as their child's "entrance fee".  My son and I could then donate our collection.  What do you guys think?  If you were invited to a playdate like this, would you find it weird or a good idea?

  • Maybe ask on the preschool board too.

I think it is ok, particularly if you can find a cute way to word it.

  • I would do it.

  • The only issue I have with your idea is- I'm afraid the whole charity concept might get overshadowed by a super-fun play date and the kids will only remember the "I played with my friends" part. I think it's great to get his preschool classmates involved, but I think it would be difficult to emphasize the lesson of giving back without physically engaging them in the process. Don't get me wrong, it can still be a fun, enjoyable time, but I think if you're wanting the kids to learn about compassion and generosity, then whatever activity you choose should highlight those concepts.

I know it depends on the child, but I think 4 year olds can understand the basic concept of charity. It's pretty similar to things they've probably heard in preschool about sharing, kindness, helping others, doing the right thing, etc. If you find an appropriate volunteer opportunity in your community I would definitely go for it and see how he does. I don't think it really matters if he mentally "gets it" yet, because the hands-on participation will also increase his understanding.
