Bottle feeding

My LO is two and a half weeks old and I introduced the bottle today. I have been EBFing and decided to pump so I could have her try it out of a bottle. We used the slow flow nipple, but after a few seconds she would start coughing, her eyes would water, and her face turned red. She would spit a lot of the BM out. It's very scary to watch. I would stop and burp her every time she would seem to get choked. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to get her to take a bottle correctly? I cradled her and had her reclined on my knees. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Bottle feeding

  • Check out kellysmom.com on how best to bottle feed a breastfed baby. We typically don't recline dd but have her in a nearly sitting up position. We also pace it so she doesn't take in too much volume at a time. At two weeks we would try and have her drink about 2mL per min so that she did a max of an ounce in 15-20 minutes with extended burping.

What bottles are you using? Perhaps the flow is too fast for her?

  • When I feed my son we have him sitting up and I am able to control the flow of milk by being able to tip the bottle down or keep it parallel to the ground so it's not too fast for him
  • What bottle are you using?  Some slow flow nipples are slower than others.
  • Same thing happened with my DD at that age and I bought the premie nipples for the Dr Browns bottles and it has not happened since.  I still don't know how to pace feed her, she sucks it down so fast.  DH normally feeds her the bottle while I am out so I really don't know how fast he lets her drink the bottle, I nag him to pace the feeding but who knows what he is doing. :-)  The spit up stopped though.  The Tommie Tippie bottles do not work for us at all.
  • I don't know what bottle you use, but they have nipples for newborns that are smaller than the slow flow ones. Normally you can only find them at baby exclusive stores like BRU or BBB
  • Thanks for all your responses! I use the playtex air vent bottles.
  • We also have the playtex ventaire bottles and even the slow flow nipple is faster than our level 1 avent nipple for our avent bottles. So maybe try using a different brand if you can.
