Crib mattress? How tight?

How tight should a crib mattress fit? The one we just got is so tight that to change the sheet we have to lift out or tilt up the mattress on each side to put a sheet on. On one side I can barely stick one finger in and on the other side I can't fit even a finger in. Should the crib mattress fit this tight or should we exchange for something with a bigger gap?

Re: Crib mattress? How tight?

  • That sounds like it's a good fit, actually.  You don't want a gap between mattress and crib frame, so even though it's a bit of a pain, lifting and tilting the mattress to put the crib sheet on is what you want.  As long as the mattress goes down flat, you should be good to go.

(Crib mattress should be a standard size anyway, so you likely would have problems trying to find one with a different fit without the fit being way off.)

  • I haven't posted in here before, so sorry if that is strange for you or something. If your crib mattress is that tight, it's exactly like it should be. The standard is basically for them to fit as tight as possible so that there is no possibility of any tiny baby arms, legs, feet, or fingers slipping down. It is a pain in the butt to change the sheet, though.

  • I agree with pp you should have to lift it to change. As much of a pain in the ass it is. It's made that way so little arms can't get stuck.
  • That sounds like a good fit. I can't even imagine how you'd be able to change a crib sheet without lifting or titling the mattress somewhat. You're going to have to do that no matter how your mattress fits.

  • They only really come in one size and you don't want a gap because it could be a suffocation hazard.

  • Yes it should be that tight. Gaps are not good.

  • Even though it's aggravating when needing to change sheets, that's how tight you want it.
