Parenting

want, need, wear, read..

We're doing it this year.  Has this been discussed here?  The baby I've got down, but I have two older kids, a 6 and a 7.5 year old, and I'm having a doozy of a time coming up with something they NEED that's not a clothing item.

Give it to me, parenting.

Re: want, need, wear, read..

  • Need is hard for us too. The babies were super easy, but DS will be 10, and DD is 6.5. DS needs some rather pricey items for his sports of choice, so we may just get him a GC to Dick's to let him pick out the wrestling shoes that he has been coveting. DD is into crafts, so I've thought about a GC to Michaels to pick out the items that she "needs" for her crafts. I hate the idea of GCs on Christmas morning, but they're getting old enough to be able to appreciate the value of picking out what they want.

  • Hmmmmm....Santa always got me socks and Chapstick. I was a loser, so I liked that stuff at that age.

Hell yeah, especially when it was the Dr. Pepper kind. Come to think of it "Santa" still gets me socks every year. The totally dorky kind that are fluffy and ugly!

  • Yes it's been discussed recently, but I can't find it. I think it's great and helps to curb excessive spending. I think "need" is subjective and doesn't need to be taken so literally. Last time we talked about it, someone gave a ridiculous example of an insulin pump or something like that lmao! I am thinking more along the lines of my kid is taking gymnastics classes and "needs" a new gymnastics outfit/costume. Maybe your kid has outgrown his bike and "needs" a new one. This my own personal interpretation, I guess.

Also, we do this from my husband and me. She still gets a few extra toys from "Santa". Of course, that's a whole other debate. ;)
