Babies: 6 - 9 Months

First night sleep training = FAIL

Any suggestions on what worked best for you and your LO when sleep training are welcome, trying to avoid all out CIO if at all possible and DS will not take a pacifier anymore ( which is a blessing AND a curse!)

DS was an amazing sleeper for the first 5 months, he was regularly sttn in his crib for 10/11hrs. Then he got a cold two weeks ago and that all went out the window, our Dr. said she sees this happen all the time and that we have to train him all over again. We are trying to avoid all out CIO, mainly because we live in a apt and don't want to drive our wonderful neighbors totally nuts! They are away this weekend so DH and I decided to at least give it a go. DH blew it right away by running in the minute DS started to fuss, then proceeded to fall asleep with DS on him for almost 2 hours. I tried to put him down again and sat by the crib while he fussed, then he totally woke up and was laughing at me, (which even harder to not respond to then crying!) Finally after 2 hours of trying to get him down, I caved and put him in the Rock n Play which for some reason he's been able to sleep in even though he has hated it for the past 2 months, tmrw is another day.

  • Ive heard that if you sleep with like a blanket or his pajamas or the crib sheets, your scent might be comforting enough to soothe him to sleep or keep him asleep.
Or you could try having him sleep in a playpen next to yall's bed and once he can get used to that, move to the crib? Either way, good luck!!

What I did like about this article is that it basically points out how we over analyze every little reason we can think of as to why they're not sleeping and by the time we think we have it figured out, LO is back to STTN again..lol

We're back to the magic sleep suit tonite, I know we'll have at least a few wake ups but so far we've gotten a 2.5hr stretch which is better than last night..

  • aww hang in there, I know the feeling. Whatever you do try it at least a week, it takes about that long for LO to adjust to a new routine. Good luck, hang in there!
  • This book has been great. It does do a little CIO, but I would still recommend it as I have not heard of one technique that doesn't do any type of crying for self-soothing.

Basically, black out shades and white noise are your friends.
  • we did this

swaddle until 3 months (she rolled one in it one night and we nixed it)
magic merlin sleep suit at 6 months (again, rolled in it)
sleep sack with fleece pjs since then. we put fleece PJS for naps too for like 2 weeks then she adjusted and we stopped.

no transition issues. worked for us as far as transitions and feeling "snuggled", which is what i think she wanted
