Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Nighttime Diapers

Ever since DS could roll over he's slept on his tummy at night. He's been wearing Huggies Overnights for several months now cuz with regular diapers he'd just wet right through the front. They work great. Until the last week or so. He's soaking through the Overnights now too! It's not coming from the sides or anything (so it's not a fitting issue)...it's right through the front. Tips?! I'm sick of changing his sheets every day and he's waking up upset since he's so wet.

  • Sounds like you need to go up a size.  DS started leaking through too last week and we went up to the next size and it's made a difference.
  • yep, go up a size.  My son is in 4's during the day and 5's at night.  Works great.

  • Ugh, really? I just bought 2 boxes of 4's since he was leaking as much as soaking through. Well, my DD is 7 weeks, so I guess eventually she can use them. How much does your DS weigh, @singingirl96 ? DS is 22lb 13oz.

My son is just about the same weight as yours. About 23lbs.

I should add that he's in size 4 regular snug&dry during the day, and size 5 Huggies overnights to sleep.  When he wakes up it is swelled to max capacity, but everything is contained and his pajamas are completely dry.

  • I agree with PP.  DS wears size 4 snug & dry during the day and size 5 overnights for nighttime.  He's 21lbs 9oz.

You could always use the size 4 overnights during the day too...especially for long car trips.

  • Alright ladies...thanks for the tips, but nothing has worked. I've tried a bigger size Huggies Overnight and a Pampers Extra Protection. Same problem with each. He's not leaking out any sides...he's soaking right through the front...through the material, not the sides. I think this is why he'd been getting up earlier. I don't think the wet sheets are happening until 5-6am and then he wakes up unhappy. I'm out of ideas. I guess he has to wear two diapers to bed!

Double diapering is the only thing that has worked for us, too.

  • My 17 Month DS has had the same problem. We tried so many solutions. Just last weekend we found Diaper Boosters to be inserted in the diaper at BRU.  $5.99 for a 30 pack.  We've been using it for almost a week and he's been dry every morning so far.  *knock on wood*
  • We've had that problem with huggies before. Walmart's parent choice brands make overnight diapers, but they are usually out of stock of the size we need, so we usually use pampers and have never had a leak with their overnight diapers. I would give it a try.

  • DS2 has been wearing 4s at night very shortly after he moved to 3s during the day.  He is just a nighttime power pee-er.  It usually works.  Occasionally his jammies still end up wet.  It  hasn't been often enough for me to change anything.  I use straight Pampers for both my kids and it has worked pretty well.  I tried Pampers Baby Dry one time and regretted it.

  • can you try going up a size?

  • My DD is in a 5 but in the weight limit for a 4.  Go up a size.  I also started pulling DD diaper high in the back, since that's where hers always leaked.  No problems now.

Is he showing any signs of being ready for potty training? You could potentially be done with diapers soon all together! Always a nice thought to look forward to haha.....
ETA: LOL my brain saw that he just turned 2 on the first of the month rather than 1 on the second....guess you have a while before potty training's an option. Sorry!

  • You could try a fleece or wool soaker over the night diaper.  They both will wick the moisture away so your DS doesn't feel wet. Wool can absorb 3x its weight in water.  (maybe ask on the CD board for recommendation specifics; we use sposies at night but haven't had issues w/ pampers sensitive).
This. My son soaked through everything we tried, except for a wool soaker. They aren't cheap, but we have not had to do a single nighttime change since we started using them six months ago when DS was about 16 months old. I'm pretty sure we have Disana woolies, but am not 100% sure, as I bought them used from a local cloth diapering group.

  • I definitely agree with going up a size, but also try different brands until you find one that works. DS wears Targets diapers and they work well. They seem to have a bit more padding in the front, which is good because he can really soak a diaper and boys soak them all in the front.

  • I gave Huggie's a 2nd shot in a bigger size last night. It did better. Only damp on the outside. Thanks for all the insight, ladies!
