Right formula?

I lurk a lot and usually only comment on the EP posts...

I've been EP since LO was a week old.  I have a freezer stash of over 2300 oz and I'm weaning from the pump.  We are starting to supplement the frozen milk with formula.  How do I know I'm using the right formula?  He's been having 2oz twice a day for a week now and he seems to spit up more and his poop is a different color.  Is that normal?  Is there anything else I should look for?  I talked to my pedi at the 4 month appointment and he didn't have a good response when I asked him what formula to try.

Re: Right formula?

  • Unfortunately, there's no way to know in advance if a formula will be "right."  The change in poop is normal - it'll change any time there's a change in diet (oh just wait for blueberry poops lol)  Are you making the bottles part formula and part BM or are you supplementing using some formula only bottles?  Mixing is usually easier on their stomach while they get used to it.

All formulas are safe and meet the same nutritional requirements but the fillers vary from brand to brand and some kids are just sensitive to a particular formulation for no specific reason.  Generally you want to give a new formula at least 2 weeks to see how they do.  If he's still spitting, there's no harm in trying a gentle version.  Just know that the change alone can cause issues so changing again may just prolong it until his system adjusts.

  • LO is getting 2 mixed bottles a day and 3 straight BM bottles.  Next week we will start 3 mixed bottles and 2 straight bottles.  I wanted to ease him into the formula while I'm still pumping.

It's kind of scary to not know if the formula will work for him or not, but I need to get away from this pump for everyone's sanity!

  • I know it can be a little nerve wracking but, barring an allergy, a formula "not working" isn't majorly problematic.  Of course you don't want to see them spitting or getting constipated and I'm not downplaying that but a little bit of both or either is kind of normal at first.  Just keep an eye on it and I'm sure he'll be fine :)
