Stranger comments

Last week ds waved to and said hi to a man on the subway. The man said hi and then said, "what is he, 6 months?".

Today a woman in the supermarket asked if he is a newborn.

Re: Stranger comments

  • That is really....bizarre. Some people just have no frame of reference for what age kids are. What did they say when you told them how old he actually is?

  • The man didn't really react. He started talking about his own children and grandchildren. The woman said "15 MONTHS?!?!" and seemed shocked.

To be fair, I think a lot of people think he's younger than he is because I wear him in a front carry, but I can't see how anyone could think he's a newborn.
  • Yeah people have no idea.  We were at a birthday party on Sunday and 90% of the people there told me DD was tall for her age, while one of the Dads who has a 2-year-old asked me if she was 10 months.  She was running around - I know some 10-month-olds can run around, but I was surprised that a Dad of a 2-year-old would ask that question.

  • Mina is pretty small for her age so people are surprised by her ability to walk so well. She also clearly says, "What's that?" while pointing. I guess it catches people off guard.

  • Ds is 23.5 lbs, and 31 or 33 inches, depending on which doctor you ask. So while he's not huge, he certainly doesn't look like an itty bitty newborn.
  • Before I had DD I couldn't for the life of me guess a kids age.

Now I'm like a year? 15 months? Right on!

DD is super tall for her age so people always guess wrong.

A repairman asked me if Kate was 6 months. After she ran up to him and said hi. She is little, but really. The newborn comment is crazy, though.
  • To be honest, before I had DS, I had no idea what size kids were at what age, or what they were doing (crawling, walking)!

Although I'm pretty sure I  wouldn't confuse a toddler with a newborn even back then. People are weird.

  • Having twins I get lots of comments. The most recent best was a man who insisted that identical twins are maternal. He said "there's fraternal and maternal and since yours are identical you have the maternal". His wife was enamored with the boys so I just let it go.

  • @ks3pink my SIL is a fraternal twin with her brother. She was at work and other teacher asked her in complete seriousness if she and her brother were identical twins. Yeah...no. It doesn't work that way.

  • People are just idiots when it comes to twins. People always asked me if me and my twin were identical. He's my brother. Not possible. :-/
  • In line with the twin comments, I've been asked on at least 3 occasions if my two dogs were from the same litter. One is a poodle and one is a cocker spaniel.
