lutefisk and lefsa, oh my!

my husband is norwegian and his parents throw this lutefisk and lefsa bash every new years day.  here's the thing... we're going... but they always want you to take just a little bit of the lutefisk... (sidenote: it's this really strange fish that when cooked is almost clear and jello-like... not good captain, not good at all).  on the bright side though - the lefsa is this potato bread/taco shell thing that is awesome!  you stuff is full of mashed potatoes and you're good to go.

anyone else have this tradition?  or even heard of lutefisk and lefsa?

  • One of my good friend's parents makes lefsa each year around Thanksgiving.  Good stuff.  Never heard of the lutefisk though - sounds yucky.
  • I'm Norwegian and have had lefsa. Yum! But lutefisk - no.
  • I'm also norwegian and we have both. I love lefsa but no lutefisk for me.?

  • Both DH & I are Norwegian. I don't like lutefisk (the thought of something soaked in lye is enough to make me gag). However, we both eat lefse, I prefer it with butter & sugar, DH likes meatballs wrapped in lefse.

  • There was a whole episode of "Bizarre Foods" on the travel channel about Lutefisk.  I'm not sure I would try it if I wasn't pregnant, but I certainly wouldn't put the poor baby through that.
  • We have the lefsa every year, but since my great grandmother died, no one has made the Lutefisk. We have lefse with meatballs instead. (The recipe for the meatballs calls for pork, veal and so much butter it's probably not good for anyone with a heart condition, but I hope to eat this for every Christmas of my life, or at least every holiday season, since I have to spend some Christmases with DH's family, where they eat lasagna and pierogies. (My Dad's fam is Norweigian and DH's is Czech.)

  • My whole family eats lutefisk except me. I can't do it. I love lefse though. I have it with butter, cinnimon and sugar. Num. I can't seem to find any since I moved to NJ from MN though. :o(
