Taking LO out of the country?

Just curious if or when you ladies would be comfortable taking LO out of the country. I know everyone's comfort level will be different and it may depend on where to. Just curious.

My In laws are in the Philippines( DH's parents and sister were on a safe island during the storm though their hometown was hit pretty bad but other family members are safe and only suffered some home damage) anyway they were supposed to come in August when LO was born, that got pushed to September, then nov-dec and now again to February. MIL has some health issues but really nothing that would legitimately keep her from travel, it really hurts that DH is so hurt because none of his immediate family have met Jackson. I love the in-laws but they're kind of flakey and honestly since he was in like high school he has taken more care of them than they did he( including his little sister). I don't think I'd personally be comfortable until Jackson's maybe 2 but that could change, but there is a chance they wouldn't make it before then and if it looked like that was happening I'd like to go visit them with DH so they could all meet.

Oh and just a side note, right when me and DH got together I had a dream we were in the Philippines with his family and I was pregnant. If it did take us going around when Jackson's 2ish that would fit our timeline when we want number two.. Selfullfilling prophecy maybe

I think it would depend on a lot of things for me, like where we were going, how long the flight was, etc. Would I go to Canada to visit DH's grandma? Absolutely. Would I be hoping on a plane to Costa Rica? Probably not. I think the age I'm comfortable with really would depend on the destination.

  • I would. I think the sooner the better. We like to travel so I want LO to get used to that lifestyle.

  • LOL, well if you fly don't you dare mention if you fly with a lap baby.

I'd probably be willing to take him anywhere our vaccinations were safe for. I'm comfortable with the flight now, but I'd be more worried about diseases. I'd probably run any trip by the ped before deciding to buy tickets.

What would you do to help them through the pressure change during take off and landing? You know when the ears pop?

In the research I've done: nursing, bottle, or pacifier will all work.  It's basically the same thing as gum/lifesavers for adults.
This is actually an old wives tale, from what I can tell. Joel didn't even care about take off and landing. Most babies don't have ear problems, so they will adjust naturally, just like you would.

  • Yea I'm not so much worried about the flight and actual travel. We have a vacation planned to Hawaii this coming August. It's taking him to a different country. Ill have to look up where our vaccinations are safe and what's recommended if any different for the Philippines

  • I'd be a little weary now with what is going on there. I do agree though, Canada, no problem. TBH, i would be weary of the Philipines right now. So it depends on the country. I am guessing to go there now they would need Hep A (I know I needed it to go to New Orleans after Katrina) and I don;t think they have done that vax yet.
