What the fuck is a roasting pan?

Wife of the year....I am cooking a roast (at least that is what I think it is...) it calls for a roasting pan. What exactly is that? Is it the elevated rack that fits into a pan?

I thought about googling this, but I am too lazy to tear myself away from UO Thursday and I figured someone might want to answer this question to get the answer badge...

I know there are fellow badge hoars out there life myself who love it when a question pops up....

A wide, shallow pan with a rack.

ETA: I own one, but I have never, ever used it.

I love the honesty within your post. I am pretty sure the roasting pan does have an elevated rack so that the juices fall to the bottom of the pan.

More importantly, how does one mark a question as answered?

I have two, one I've used a bunch of times for cooking roast beef or a whole chicken in the oven. The other is still in the box since it was a wedding gift (that we didn't register for.) It's basically a pan with a rack in it, the meat sits on the rack and the pan catches the drippings.

In a pinch, you can use a cookie cooling rack on top of a cookie sheet.

    The more you know.

I use my roasting pan the most (with the rack removed) to make double batches of chex mix. It holds more than a cookie sheet or brownie pan. I've used it a couple times for turkeys.

I have only used my roasting pan for whole chicken.  I registered for it when i got married because people said i should, and never thought i would use it, but i i have used it a bunch.  i do think you can survive without one - i use it because i have it.

Just a rack with a pan, but i put all sort of veggies in the pan when cooking chicken, add some lemons and broth and the whole thing is crazy awesome

I don't cook a lot of meat in my roasting pan, but use it a lot as a Bain Marie (water bath) when I make custards or cheesecakes.

The amount of cursing found in many of my posts is a direct result of my no longer being able to curse freely in my household...Now that DD can talk.

Thankfully, I now have an outlet to which I can curse and plenty of topics/posters that fulfill my cursing needs.

And to think we used to be censored. I'm so fucking glad that's over.

  • I used to use one for my roasts, but now always use slow cooker too.

I do use this every year for a Turkey though. Never used one with a rack in it. Mine is similar to this little beauty. It was the same type my mom always used when I was growing up. I hardly ever use the lid though. I think I have used foil any time I needed to cover something in it.
