Kids in cabs

We are going downtown next weekend. We are driving, but want to only park the car once. What is the rule about kids in cabs? It's not really feasible to bring car seats. Do people risk it or do they just not ride in cabs?

DH and I were just wondering in case the weather was nasty.

I did once get in a cab without a seat when we walked and took a subway in Chicago and had a hard time walking all the way back down Michigan Avenue. But I also know that the car would go 10 mph the whole way.

This is our exact scenario. I plan to walk, but I wanted to know in case it's 40 degrees and raining.

Alternatively you could look into public transportation like the bus, metro, light rail, etc. Then you can skip the car seat safely.

@LauraT25 Why does a bus or light rail make it safer? They are also involved in accidents. I know there aren't seat belts on them, but the risk is still there. (I'm assuming by metro, you mean a subway, which is a little different.)

I've also wondered this same thing...which is why we put off our trip to New York this winter.

  • While it is generally legal to ride in taxi without a child restraint it is never something I would do. The laws of physics do not change just because its a taxi and even a crash at 10 miles an hour will throw your child with enough force that you wouldn't be able to hang onto them. I really wish it wasn't legal.
