Regular GYN or Gynecologic Oncologist for Myomectomy?

So my husband and I had our second appointment with the RE this week. She reviewed the results of all of our testing. As I suspected, and as my GYN recommended, my fibroids need to be removed. One of the larger ones is on the fundus and is now pressing down into the top of my uterine cavity and is most likely the culprit of my blocked left Fallopian tube (pressing on the tube). The RE recommends having a gynecologic oncologist do the surgery due to the size of the fibroids (two that are 15 cm). My regular GYN says she can still remove them for me. I'm leaning towards the GYN oncologist. Has anyone had a GYN oncologist do their myomectomy? The one I'm considering specializes in robotic surgery but my RE and GYN both said I would need a laparotomy.

Re: Regular GYN or Gynecologic Oncologist for Myomectomy?

  • I hAve fibroids as well and will most likely need to get them removed after i give birth.... But honestly I would seriously think about seeing a fibroid specialist instead of your OBGYN for procedure. Especially if you are getting it removed in order to try and get pregnant! You want to avoid scarring etc... This is just my opinion but will follow this route myself when it comes time for mine to be removed.

  • If it is feasible I would definitely go with a gyn oncologist.  An ob/gyn spends most of their time doing prenatal and delivering babies whereas a gyn oncologist does mostly surgery.  Since you are having a gynecological surgery I would rather go to someone whose primary job is surgery.

  • Thank you both for the input! It's always nice to hear others' thoughts. After much thinking, I have decided to go with the GYN oncologist. I did some further research on one of the docs my RE recommended and he specializes in myomectomy and other GYN surgeries. He's also certified in daVinci but I'm sure I would need the abdominal myomectomy anyway due to the size and location of my fibroids. I spoke to the nurse at my REs office yesterday and she is going to schedule an appointment with the GYN oncologist and send over my chart. Turgi - what type of fibroids do you have?
  • I had mine removed by my GYN. I didn't have any problems but I agree if there's a more experienced route for you to take, then go for it. The biggest thing is you want to preserve fertility. You have to do what's right for you but for me an open myomectomy, while a longer recovery, had the least chance of impacting my fertility (less chance for mistakes - just my opinion!) I had a second opinion from a leading laparoscopic surgeon in the area and he concurred. Actually I'm about to hit my one year anniversary of my surgery. The holidays were a great time to have it because I had more down time. I also agree with your decision for removal - a pregnancy with them if achieved would be very uncomfortable and probably lead to complications. GL!

  • Thanks MarylandWed. So glad your surgery and recovery went well! Was hoping to have the surgery next month before the Christmas holiday but the earliest appointment I could get for the initial consult was Dec 19! :-( How large were your fibroids and where were they located? Also, how long were you in the hospital? I'm hearing 2-3 days.
