Choking??

My son got a cold last week and hasn't been feeling too well this week. Went to the doctor and they said it was viral. He has bouts where he just suddenly screams in pain and is very irritable. They ruled out ear infection. The past two days I have tried giving my son his vitamin d drops and he chokes...it is absolutely terrifying. Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas why? He never had a problem until this week.
