S/O Actual vs. adjusted age - solids?

DD is going to be 6 months actual on Sunday (I can't believe it!) and she weighed 12 lbs 8oz at her weight check at the LC last week. I was wondering when others started solids with their preemies: did you use the adjusted age or actual age? We have her 6 month appointment next week and I'll ask her pedi about it, but I was curious to see what others have done. I didn't think I'd be excited to start solids, but with all the struggles we've had with my low milk supply I'm looking forward to trying another source of food even though I know solids are "just for fun till one."

Re: S/O Actual vs. adjusted age - solids?

  • We started solids (oatmeal) around 5 months adjusted. It took him awhile to get the hang of it. Plus, he was super constipated, so we skipped the rice and went straight to oatmeal, which didn't make a difference. He still didn't poop. We moved to fruit and veggies purees soon after. My advice is not to rush it - bottles are so much easier and less messy! Plus, some kids do take a little longer to catch onto eating solids, so don't force the issue if she doesn't seem ready at this point. GL!

We tried at 6m actual but they had no interest until after they were 6m adjusted. There is nothing wrong with trying at actual age if you got the go ahead but don't stress if she has no interest at first.

  • Our pedi told us to try at our 4 month appt because he's gaining weight so well and holds his head up really good. So we tried a few times about 4 months, 2 weeks actual but he's not ready. He does make a few chewing motions but mostly just gags on it and doesn't swallow. We'll try again in a month or so. I'm not really in a rush.

  • If you think she is interested, I'd go ahead and give it a shot! If she hates it, wait and try again in a few weeks.

  • @CeeBug. Did your LO's gag on it? I think that means he's not ready but I'm not totally sure. And we don't have another appt with the Dr until the end of Dec.

  • My plan is to wait until at least 6m actual. At that point, if they're showing signs of readiness, I'll give it a go. If not, we'll wait. I'm really in no rush bc it's a bunch of extra work. We waited until 6m w my oldest (FT).

  • Thank you! I was just thinking maybe we should try one veggie. He had rice cereal in the NICU to try and help his reflux (which I don't think it did) and it made him super constipated! I'm not looking forward to that.

  • We started with some rice cereal and oatmeal at 5 months actual, and started the purees at 6 months actual.  It took a couple of tries before she got the hand of it, and she was definitely way more interested in actual veggies and not rice cereal or oatmeal.

  • 6m actual but it was more about how well she could hold her head up and support her neck and spine. We are still just dabbling with bite sized things like bananas, avocado, and cantaloupe. We need to be more consistent and pick it up a bit.

  • Okay, so what veggies did everyone start with? And what is the deal with avocado? I see a lot of people posting about it.

  • Just had our 4month appt today and my pedi said to not start any solids, even rice cereal until 5months adjusted at least. So that's 6.5mos actual for us. I'm ok with that and will follow his suggestions!
  • Our pedi told us to wait till 6 months actual (everyone we know starts at 4m). We started solids (oatmeal) a couple days before 6 months. They loved it. It took them a while to get the hang of it.
