Taking newborn outside in the fall/winter?

My LO is almost 3 weeks old and I'm itching to take him outside just to get some fresh air! The problem is the weather is getting colder...I think it is 30 degrees outside today! That seems way too cold to take a little one outside (other than just to take him to the car). What does everyone think? If he's bundled up enough, is it okay to play outside? Or should I wait until spring?

Re: Taking newborn outside in the fall/winter?

  • You have to take it day by day but of course it's ok to take them out when it's cold.  Bundle him up and make sure he has on a hat and mittens and make sure it's not so bitterly cold/windy that you worry about his face.  Being outside is actually good.  One of the biggest reasons people are sicker in the winter isn't because it's cold but because we're indoors much more than normal where the germs just recirculate.

  • I take my DD out and it's really cold here. 9 degrees already. I just dress her well. I believe its healthy for her. And she actually sleeps better when we go out than when we stay at home. Just make sure she is warm
  • I have a toddler and if he doesn't run around outside he goes crazy, so I go out with my month old everyday.

  • I put my LO in the ergo and put her winter hat in. Tuck a blanket around her and we roll. With the newborn insert... She stays toasty warm. I'm in MN and we went for a 30 min walk tonight. It was cool enough for me to wear gloves and a hat... She came our of the ergo sweating. Go for it.

  • I live in NY so I have to take my LO out in all weather. Bundle up and maybe throw a light blanket over the stroller to cut the wind and go for it! My LO seems unphased by the temperature when she is bundled up.
  • Seems fine to me as long as he is bundled and warm.

  • Yeah...I love in central Canada, so I promise baby will be fine! Bundle up! And cool air is good for baby's lungs
  • That fresh air is so good for baby lungs. Scandinavians believe so highly of fresh air for babies they park them outside in gardens to sleep. In the cities I remember there were always carriages/prams/strollers parked outside of cafés all year long. Mums and dads were inside having a coffee and visiting with friends while the babies slept outside, cozy and warm.
I'd suggest that if you don't plan to baby wear, then put the rain cover on your stroller to keep the wind off. Then bundle baby as normal.
