Follicle Count & Size (post RE visit)

The fella and I went to the RE yesterday for initial tests and a transvag sonogram. Sadly, I had only three follicles in one ovary, and five follicles in the other. Both were under 10mm. I'm feeling extremely frustrated and hopeless at this point. I'm amazed at how little information is on the Internet regarding follicle size and ovulation.

My monitor has been reading High for 8 days. I had EWCM yesterday and today. My temps are OK, so everything is pointing toward Ovulation. And yesterday during the sonogram, the doctor commented that there is a lot of fluid in/around the ovaries and that it looked like I either just ovulated or would be ovulating in the next couple days. BUT, is that even possible with follies that are >10mm??

Argh! I am so frustrated! (And I feel like I'm really obsessed about getting this answered/understood.)

Re: Follicle Count & Size (post RE visit)

  • I just read this:

Follicle size and ovulation are not as related as we may want. You can have an LH surge causing ovulation, but your follicles may not be mature enough to release an egg. And the opposite is true - you can have a mature follicle but without an LH surge, it won't release the egg. You must have both for a successful ovulation. So it is the LH surge that determines when the ovulation occurs, not the size of the follicle. The size of the follicle does determine the viability of the egg, however. Usually it must be at least 18 mm or larger to be able to produce a viable egg. Any smaller it may still release an egg, but it may not be mature enough, so if it is fertilized it may not survive - thus resulting in a chemical miscarriage.

Does this ring true with others?

  • yes I have"weak" ovulation meaning I get an LH surge and I ovulate but my eggs are not maturing enough to be fertilized.   This can be tied to several factors.. in my case we think it is due to a combination of factors... low progesterone, high insulin,  and Hashimoto's ( hyporthyroid) seems to be my issue.

  • I'm still waiting for progesterone and estrogen counts to come in. Hopefully I know more soon. I don't get the final diagnosis until December 19. Such a long way to wait.

Thanks for responding. I've been following your blog for the last few months. Fingers crossed for you.

  • Just got more results back from my RE. My AMH went from .32 last year to 1.3 today. CRAZY. The only thing I have done differently is follow a paleo diet (no sugars, no carbs/wheat/gluten, no dairy). I've been specifically staying away from dairy at all costs, so I wonder if this has helped...
