Cloth Diapering

Very HE Front Loader - Help Needed!

I've got a brand new (in March) Kenmore Elite Front Loader. This thing uses next to no water. I've played around with my wash routine a bunch of times and finally thought I had something that worked. Rinse - Express Wash Hot/Cold (4 extra buckets of water added) then a Heavy Duty wash Hot/Cold with 1 tbsp Nellie's detergent (4-6 buckets of water added).

With the hot rinses and wash, plus the extra water, I would think I should be getting everything clean enough.  But my overnight inserts stink of ammonia when I change DD in the mornings.  And some of her daytime diapers have been getting an ammonia smell quickly too (they don't smell when I change her, but if the diaper sits for just an hour or two I can smell it already.)

I'm at a total loss, what should I do for this ammonia funk?

  • Try adding a wet towel. Tricks the machine to add more water and helps agitate the diapers better. You might be adding too much water which won't allow the diapers to properly be agitated.

  • I have a Kenmore Elite HE FL. I love it, but it requires extra cycles. Here is my routine:

    Rinse/drain/spin on warm/warm.
Delicate cycle on warm/warm and the spin turned off.
"Whitest whites" setting with detergent (heavy duty hot wash with 2 cold rinses).
Express wash cold w/ second rinse

That is what I do. No towel added either since that caused some dipes to pill, plus it did nothing. GL

  • When you take her ON diaper off in the morning, rinse it out in hot water and soak it in a bucket of hot water for at least a few hours. Also, since you're starting to get an ammonia smell in your other diapers, it may be a good time to hot water strip all your inserts. You can just soak them in a tub of hot water for a few hours since you have a FL. If that doesn't help, you may have some detergent build-up and could try stripping with RLR or washing soda.

  • Thanks. I'll try the hot water strip again. I have been doing fairly regular (every 3-4 weeks) soaks with Rockin Green Funk Rock. Maybe I'm just doomed to have to do these more often... We are moving soon, new place still has a FL, but I'm really hoping it will work better for dipes than the one I've got.

awesome. I'll try the new wash routine also, see if it helps. It would be great to not have to be constantly trucking buckets of water across the hall from bath to washer!
