Flips...

Anyone use Flip diapers? The sound appealing to me... also do they work with newborns?

Re: Flips...

  • I haven't used anything yet (as baby isn't here yet!) - but I did just get some Flips in the mail.  I will say, they look just a hint bigger than my NB Rumparooz, so I'm guessing they will probably fit baby from the beginning (if she's big), or earlier than the other OS's I bought.

I agree with PPs though about getting a newborn stash (you know, from my research, and just seeing the diapers).  I have: 2 Bummis Super Brite, 2 Rumparooz NB, and on-the-way 2 Tiny Assunta covers with 8 GMD fitteds and 2 dozen OsoCozy "infant" prefolds (they go from 6 to 16 lbs, so look like they will last longer than most "infant" products).

Then again, I built 90% of my stash to be covers and prefolds/fitteds - that's what I wanted.

Again - no actual experience yet, but after my research, this is what I decided to go with.

  • Unless you have a baby with chunky thighs, no. Mine didn't dit well until 3 months on my skinny girl.

And I hated them until we had solid poops. The stay dry inserts would shift and poop would be everywhere on the cover. I'd suggest prefolds if you want to do that route.

  • I had a fairly solid baby, and Flips didn't work for us until about 3 months out. They're still not my favorite system b/c DS tends to have very messy poop, so the covers always get dirty (versus prefolds or flats that can be folded to catch the poo).

  • I have Flip covers (they started fitting DD at about 8 weeks - and she was a chubster), but do not care for the Flip inserts other than the overnight organic. The stay-dry Flip inserts are not absorbent enough for DD and they tend to bunch. I prefer using the covers with a prefold - cheaper and more effective.

  • We've used flip as a cover. I like them much better than other covers. And they fit on my chubby guy at 3-4 weeks. No skinny NB legs here!!

My 4 month olds legs are so chunky! They rival my friends 11 month olds in circumference! (Mines all chub... Her little girl is petite so little to no chub!)

  • Flip covers did not start fitting DD2's legs until she was around 3 months.

And like Sarenu1, said the Flip inserts are not good for NB poop. It's runny and your covers end up dirty. You can use PF's with the Flip covers until the runny stage is over, but they are still too big for a NB.

I recommend getting a separate NB stash. Smaller covers with PF's. It's a cheap option and since they are not in them very long they are normally in very good condition to sell used, once your LO moves up to a One size diaper.

  • I would get some NB covers tbh. I think Flips would be kind of big on a NB. We have one and the rest of our covers are NB Bummis Whisper Wraps and Rumparooz. The Rumparooz seems a bit bigger for a NB cover but idk I just have a Bummis to compare it to but I'm assuming it's due to the snap down rise it has so it can grow with your NB a bit more than other NB covers. I ordered my NB Rumparooz through Diaper Junction for $10/ea.

A lot of people seem to like Thirsties as well, I might order one or two of those as well when I order more prefolds.

I can't really say about Flip inserts as I just bought the cover. I figured we could just trifold prefolds when he can actually fit into his Flips down the road. But this is just what we plan to do, I can't really give much advice on how things actually work lol.
  • Flips have been the only ones I have used and in love them. For every step from 3 months to two years old now. I have no newborn advice though...i used pampers first 3 months with my first and will use pampers for second the first month or so with this one.
